d.LucretiusasaPhilosopher
CriticsuniversallyrecognizeLucretiusasamajorpoetandtheauthorofoneofthegreatclassicsofworldliterature.ButinpartbecauseofhisacceptedroleasaspokespersonforEpicureanismratherthananoriginator,ithasbeenmoredifficulttoassesshismeritasaphilosopher.
Inthisrespect,itisnoteworthythatatleasttwoimportantphilosophershavevoicedstrongsupportforLucretius’statusasaphilosophicalinnovatorandoriginalthinker.In1884,whilestillayoungfacultymemberattheBlaisePascalLyceeinParis,theFrenchphilosopherHenriBergson(1859-1941)publishedaneditionofDeRerumNaturawithnotes,commentary,andanaccompanyingcriticalessay.Throughoutthiswork,BergsoncommendsLucretiusnotonlyasapoetofgenius,butalsoasaninspiredand“singularlyoriginal”thinker.Inparticular,hepointsoutthatinhisviewthepoet’sinstinctivegraspofthephysicaloperationsofnatureandhiscomprehensive,trulyscientificworld-viewexceedanythingfoundinthetheoriesofDemocritusandEpicurus.
