Itisoftenassumedthatifacultureistechnologicallyadvanced,itmustbesuperiororthatifacultureisyoungitmustbeinferior.Everyonetendstomakevaluejudgmentsaboutothercultures.Findingfaultwithormakingfunofothercustomsandbeliefsisoftenmerelyawayofbolstering(supportingatheorycauseetc.)ourcomplacency(feelingofpersonalcontent,satisfaction)ourpride.Itiscertainlymucheasiertolearnaboutotherculturesifoneapproachesthemwithanopenmindandifonerespectsdifferencesratherthancriticizingthem.Oftensomethingthatappearsstrangeorunusualinotherculturesisinfactverylogicalandpartofadeeplyrootedtradition.Whatmightseemrudeinoneculturemightseemperfectlynormalandacceptableinanotherculture.Toleranceandcuriosityarekeyfactorsinallcross-culturallearningexperiences.

Here“ritual”referstothethingspeopleunanimously(unanimous:
in/showingcompleteagreement)doorsaywhenparting.“One-upmanship”meansonetriestobemorepolitethantheother.Ifonesaysone“Goodbye”,theotherwillsayittwoorthreetimes.
这里的“仪式”指的是人们在分手时一致(一致地:
在/表现出完全一致的)做或说的事情。
“one-up风度”是指一个人试图比另一个人更有礼貌。
如果一个人说“再见”,另一个人会说两到三次。
