currentmarketforcessuchastherequirementsofthesarbanes-OxleyAct(SOX)haveincreaseddemandforentrylevelaccountants.Whilestudentenrollmentsinaccountingprogramshavebeguntoriseinresponsetothisdemandtohirecollegeaccountingmajorsremainsintensestudentsandemployerslooktofacultyforhelpinnavigatingchallenges.Long-termrelationshipsbetweenemployers,faculty,andstudentsarecritical.Long-termrelationshipshelpemployersmakeefficientuseofrecruitingresources,helpfacullyunderstandtheneedsofbothemployersandstudents,andhelpstudentsidentifysuitableemployers.Withoutlong-termrelationships,employersarelesslikelytoattractstudentstotheirJobopeningsandfacultymembersarelesslikelytorecommendthatstudentspursuethoseopenings.Thekeyfactorsindevelopinglong-termrelationshipsarethesamefactorsasforotherrelationships:

trustthroughrespect,mutualbenefit,andconsistency.

Employersshouldconcentratetheireffortsonafewkeycampuses.Thisreducesthehighcostofrecruitingwhilemaximizingresults.thenumberofcampuseswilldependunone'srecruitingneeds,butatleastfourisrecommended.Adiversepoolofschools,publicandprivate,largeandsmall,isanimportantfactor.Employersshouldthinkoftheschoolsasaportfolioandconsidertheirabilitytomeetthefirm'slong-termneedforadiversesetofemployeeswithvaryingbackgroundsandinterests.

Concentratingonasmallnumberofcampusesforcesemployerstothinkaboutthematchbetweenjobopportunityandstudentbeforetherecruitingprocessbegins.theselectionofcampusesshouldbebusedonseveralfactors,suchasthelocationandprofileofthefirmandthetypeofservicesthefirmprovides.Forexample.ifafirm’sclientsarelocatedinsmallcommunities,thenchoosesomeschoolsfromsmallcommunitiesorschoolsinthatgeographicarea.Studentsatthoseschoolsmightbemoreeagerthanstudentsfromlargecitiestoworkinsmallcommunities.Ifafirmhasalargetaxservice,recruitingatcampuseswithastrongtaxfacultymightbemoreimportant.

Thealmamateroffirmpersonnelislikelytobeafactorintheselectionofschools.Apersonalconnectionbetweenfirmmembersandaschoolhastheadvantageofprovidinggoodwillwiththefacultyandgoodunderstandingofthecampusculture.Italsodemonstratestostudents(prospectiveemployees)thattheytoocanbesuccessfulatthefirm..frequentle,firmsuserecentgraduatesaspartoftheirrecruitingeffortsoncampus.Itisunwisetoconsiderthisfactor,however,overthecriteriaoutlinedabove.

When.startingarelationshipwithacampus,thefirstcontactshouldbethedepartmentchair.Discussthefirmanditsrecruitinggoals,alongwiththefirm’sdesiretoestablishalong-termrelationship,andthefirm’sreasonforchoosingtheschool.

Ifafirmhasnotrecruitedattheschoolbefore,orifthechairisnotfamiliarwiththefirm.provideinformationaboutthefirm.sendfirmliterature,andconsiderapersonalmeeting.Therelationshipisimportantlothesuccessofrecruitingefforts.

Rememberthatfacultymembershaveaprimaryallegiancelotheirstudents,whichmeansthattheirgoalistoprovideawide;anddiversenumberofopportunitiesforthem.Don’texpectfacultytosupportonefirmoveranother.Helpthefacultytoseetheopportunitiesthefirmoffers,sotheycaninformstudents,Facultymembersmustremainneutral.butcanhelpastudentfindtherightfit.On-campusinterviewsareagoodopportunitytomeetwiththefacultyanddescribethefirm.Thecareerservicesofficescanarrangeluncheswithfacultymembers.
