Morehouseholds,businesses,andschools areontheNet,too.⑤ Theonly laggardinthe digital revolutionisgovernment:

 Local, state,and federalgovernmentscombinedspent9.4%moreeachyearoncomputersbetween1986and1996,whilebusinessspent 22%more ayear inthesameperiod.

Venture capitalistsare pouringmoneyinto thedevelopmentofgrowingcompanies, oftenbecoming involved asboard membersand advisers,andhelping startupsrefinebusinessplans.

“It’simportanttokeep aneyeonthestraight dollaramount ofventurecapital intheeconomy, butit’sjustasimportanttoremembertheexponentialrippleeffectofthe cash,”noteAtkinsonand Court.

“Manyofthe gazellesoftheNewEconomyareventure-backedcompanies, andthey arehavinga profoundimpact—employment inventure-backedcompanies increased34% annuallybetween 1991 and1995whileemployment inFortune500companiesdeclined 3.6%.

Moreover,venture-capital-backedfirmsare moretechnologicallyinnovativethanotherfirms.”

Thenumbersofengineersandscientistsare growing;

jobsrequiringscienceandengineeringexpertisewillgrow threetimes fasterthanother occupations between 1994 and2005.

Withoutadequately preparedhomegrown workerstofill thesejobs,andwithdecreasedcorporatespendingontrainingprograms, the demand forengineers and scientistswillincreasinglybe metbyimmigrants.

Already,almost one-fourthofengineers inthe U.S.whoearnedPh.D.sin thelastfiveyearsareforeignborn.
