TheTeachingofCultureintheEnglishLanguageEducationI.Introduction
InteachingEnglishasaforeignlanguage,theimportanceofteachingculturehasbeenwidelyrecognized.Howeverhowtoteachcultureinforeignlanguageeducationisaproblemfacedbylanguageeducatorsallovertheworld.InthepresentthesisconcerninglinguistictheoriesandvariouswaysofteachingforeigncultureintheEnglishclassroomwillbesurveyedandstudiedinthelightofChinesesituation.ThepresentthesisstressesthatcultureteachingisveryessentialintheEnglishlanguageeducation.TheteachingoflanguageandtheteachingofcultureareofthesameimportanceintheEnglishclassroom.
Languageandculturearecloselyrelated.Inforeignlanguageeducation,thedefinitionofcultureteachingshouldincludeallthehumanachievementsofcivilizationandthewaysoflifeandthedifferenthabitsofpeople.Culturedifferencesarereflectedinlanguagesandcommunicativeactivities.Furthermoreitmakesgreatdifferenceincommunicationwhetherlearnerscanunderstandorknowtheculturaldifferences,culturalrules,andeventheculturaltaboos.
However,intraditionalapproachestolanguageteaching,theaimsofalanguageteachingcourseareveryoftendefinedwithreferencetothefour"
languageskills"
:
understandingspeech,speaking,readingandwriting.Cultureteachingisnottakensoimportantateachingtargetastheabovementionedlanguageskills.Becauseofthelackofculturalknowledge,studentsoftenmakeculturalmistakeswhentheycommunicatewithnativespeakers.
FromyearsofmyexperienceinteachingEnglish,IgraduallyrealizetheimportanceofcultureteachingtoChinesestudents.Englishteachingshouldbeaimedatdevelopingstudents’communicativecompetencesothattheywouldbeabletoreactfreelyandproperwithnativespeakersofEnglishinvarioussocialsituations.Languageshouldbetaughtinculture.Thetwoareofthesameimportance.
