TheStanfordsandfoundingPresidentDavidStarrJordanaimedfortheirnewuniversitytobenonsectarian,co-educationalandaffordable,toproduceculturedandusefulgraduates,andtoteachboththetraditionalliberalartsandthetechnologyandengineeringthatwerealreadychangingAmerica.

Theirvisiontookshapeontheoak-dottedfieldsoftheSanFranciscoPeninsulaasamatrixofarcadesandquadranglesdesignedforexpansionandthedissolvingofbarriersbetweenpeople,disciplinesandideas.

Fromthestart,stewardshipofthefounders’extraordinarylandgifthashelpedsupportuniversityendeavors,andhasmaderoomforamultiplicityofinstitutes,schoolsandlaboratoriesthatcross-fertilizeeachotherwithinnovationsthathavechangedtheworld.Computertime-sharing,thefirstisolationofhighlypurifiedstemcellsandthefirstsynthesisofbiologicallyactiveDNA,amongmanyotherbreakthroughs,alloriginatedatStanford.

Theearlyyearsweredifficult,however,aseventheStanfords’wealthprovedinadequatetotheirvision.Afterherhusband’sdeath,JaneStanfordkeptthefledglinguniversityopenthroughherleadership.The1906earthquakedealtafurtherblow,killingtwopeopleanddestroyingseveralcampusbuildings,somesonewtheyhadneverbeenoccupied.

UniversitybenefactorandtrusteeHerbertHoover,futureU.S.presidentandmemberofStanford’sPioneerClassof1895,professionalizeduniversityoperationsinthe1920sandhelpedtoputStanfordonasoundfinancialfooting.Hefoundedaninstitutetocollectglobalpoliticalmaterial–today’sHooverInstitutionLibraryandArchives–andledthecreationoftheGraduateSchoolofBusiness,bothnowworldleadersintheirrespectivefields.
