3、deroomforamultiplicityofinstitutes,schoolsandlaboratoriesthatcross-fertilizeeachotherwithinnovationsthathavechangedtheworld.Computertime-sharing,thefirstisolationofhighlypurifiedstemcellsandthefirstsynthesisofbiologicallyactiveDNA,amongmanyotherbreakthroughs,alloriginatedatStanford.Theearlyyearswere

4、difficult,however,aseventheStanfordswealthprovedinadequatetotheirvision.Afterherhusbandsdeath,JaneStanfordkeptthefledglinguniversityopenthroughherleadership.The1906earthquakedealtafurtherblow,killingtwopeopleanddestroyingseveralcampusbuildings,somesonewtheyhadneverbeenoccupied.Universitybenefactoran

5、dtrusteeHerbertHoover,futureU.S.presidentandmemberofStanfordsPioneerClassof1895,professionalizeduniversityoperationsinthe1920sandhelpedtoputStanfordonasoundfinancialfooting.HefoundedaninstitutetocollectglobalpoliticalmaterialtodaysHooverInstitutionLibraryandArchivesandledthecreationoftheGraduateScho
