   Peoplehaveestablishedroutesonwater,too.Riversandcanalshaveservedaseffectiveroutesforpeopletomovearoundandcarrythings.Forinstance,intheold,JapanesecityofEdo,waterrouteswereusedforthetransportationofagriculturalproducts,seafood,andwood.Peoplehavealsoopenedroutesacrossthesea.Theseawayswerecriticalforthenavigationofships,particularlyinthedayswhentheymovedmainlybywindpower.Usingthesesearoutes,peoplecouldtravelgreatdistances,andgotoplacestheyhadnotpreviouslybeenabletoreach.
