In1952,heshowedhisplantotheBurbankCitygovernment,fora16-acresitebetweenGriffithParkandhisstudioinBurbank.Theydidn’tgoforit.“Wedon’twantthecarnival(嘉年华会)atmosphere,”anofficialsaid.“Wedon’twanttheloudmusicandscreaming.”

ThefailuregotDisneythinkingevenbigger.In1953,heclosedadealtobuysomelandinAnaheim.Somedesignersthoughtitwastoofar,butDisneywentahead.Itwaslikebuildinganewcity.Pipeshadtobefixed.Railwaytrackhadtobelaidaround.Disneychosethehub-and-spoke(轴辐式)streetpatternthatmanycitieshave.“IwantDisneylandtobeaplacewhereyoucan’tgetlost,”hesaid.Designersandarchitectsalsodiagrammed(图解)theridesandmademodels,whileartistspaintedthebackground.

FinallyinJuly1955,thevisitorscame.Iftheypickedupmaps,theycouldseetheresultsofyears’planning:
