Heathcliff,theheroofWutheringHeights,isthemostdepictedcharacterinthebook.Thisbookisfocusedonhistragicstory.HewasintruelovewithCatherinewhenhewasyoung,butafterHindley’soppressionandhumiliationagainsthimandthebetrayalofCatherine,hislovetowardsCatherinewasgoneandallthathelivedforwasrevenge.ThispapermainlydiscusseshisrevengesonHindley,CatherineandherhusbandEdgar,hisambitionofconquestandhislifeofawalkingcorpse.

i.Heathcliff’srevenge

HeathcliffwastakentoWutheringHeightsandbecameonememberofEarnshaw’sfamily.Mr.Earnshawregardedhimashisbelovedson,andnamedhimafterthenameofhissondiedininfancy.ButafterMr.Earnshaw’sdeath,hischildhood’ssenseofsuperiority,developedbythefavorofMr.Earnshaw,hadfadedaway.HindleydroveHeathclifffromtheircompanytotheservantandmadehimdolaborworkashardasanyotherladonthefarm.What’sevenworse,theonlythingthathehad-Catherine’saffection,wastransferredtoEdgar.Whatcouldamanbecomewithoutlove?

i.1Heathcliff’srevengeonHindley

ThreeyearsafterHeathcliffranawayfromWutheringHeights,hecameback.HemadehisrevengeplanonHindley.Hesetabooby-trap,andHindleyfellintoitstepbystep.HindleysitupallnightplayingcardswithHeathcliff,drinkingandcorruptingallthetime.Tohisexpectation,Hindleylostallhismoneyonthebetandhadtoborrowmoneyonhisland.Whenhedied,heownednothing.“Hisfatherdiedindebt,thewholepropertyismortgaged,andtheonlychanceforthenaturalheiristoallowhimanopportunityofcreatingsomesympathyinthecreditor’sheart,thathemaybeinclinedtodealgenerouslywithhim.”Thisisthefinalverdictofhislawyertowardshim-hissonhadtoliveathisenemy’smercyandhispastservantbecametheownerofhisproperty-WutheringHeights.

HeathcliffreturnedtoappearinCatherine’slifenotbecausehestilllovedherbutbecausehewantedtoremindherofherhumiliationonhim.Hemadeherbelievethatitwasherbetrayalthatmadehimbecomesocruelandcold-bloodedaman.HealsoattributedIsabella’stragicmarriageonhertellinghimIsabellaistheheirofherbrotherunlesssheboreason.SoCatherinewouldtortureherselftodeathwithself-reproachandremorse.Booby-trapagain.

i.3Heathcliff’srevengeonEdgar

Edgaristhemanwhoscratchedhislover,Heathcliffalsotookrevengeonhim.HepretendedtoflirtwithhiswifetoprovokehimandmakehimfeelthatCatherinelovedHeathcliffmorethanhimself.Hedidn’twanthisdaughterCathytomarryweakLinton.HeathcliffdetainhisdaughterandmadehermarryLinton.Edgarwassofuriousthathediedingrief.Hedidmakeawillthathewilllefthislegacytohisdaughterorhersonifshedied.Heathcliffenjoyedhissufferingevenwhenhedied,hetookawayeverythinghehad,andbecamethemasterofthrushcrossgrange.EdgarhadbeenincompletecontrolofHeathcliff.

Thecausesoftherevengesarethewillofconquest,thepoisonthatpermeatesinHeathcliff’sbody.Thispartwilldealwiththeoriginofthewillofconquest.

IntheOxfordDictionaries,thisitem”conquest”isdefinedastheactofgainingcontrolofsomeoneorsomethingordealwithsomethingthatisdifficultordangerous.

Yes.Heathcliff’swillofconquestcomesfrompriorcauses-thehumiliationsfromHindley,Linton’sfamilyandthesociety,theoppressionofHindleyandmostdeadly,thebetrayalofCatherine.Heisabandonedbytheworld.Soheseeksrevengetoconquerallthepeopleandpropertiesoverwhichhehadnocontrolinthepast,whichgiveshimtheperceivedgreatestpleasure.

ii.2theactofconquestbythewillofconquest

Inhisrevenges,Hindley,CatherineandEdgararecompletelyincontrolofHeathcliff,hencehefeltthesatisfactionofconquest.TheoccupationoftheWutheringHeightsandthrushcrossgrangehedidn’thaveinthepastalsogavehimasenseofsuperiority.

Notonlythattheactofrevengesandthepossessionofthelandandmoney,positionhelpHeathcliffgettheachievementofconquestbutthathissuccessfulcontrolonHareton,hissonandCathy’sfate.
