ThepoemdepictsareligiouseventcarriedononaHolyThursday,inwhichrowsofcleanchildrendressedincheerfulclotheswalkintoSaintPaulcathedralinasortofprocession,guidedbybeadles.CitizensofLondontown,includingtheagedman,sitandobservetheceremonywhilethousandsoflittleboysandgirlselevatetheirhandsandasongisraisedtoHeaven.
ThepoemisacriticismoftheFoundlingHospital.OrphansatthehospitalwouldbecleanedandmarchedannuallytoSaintPaulcathedraltosing.Thiswasseenasatreatfortheorphans.ThebleakrealityoftheirlivesisdepictedinHolyThursday(SongsofExperience).
