Intheearlyreviewsofthisnovelrevealsavarietyofattitudestowardandassessments.SomeearlyreviewerssuspectedstronglythatSonsandLoversisanautobiographicalwork.
“WesuspectthatPaulisaprojectionofthewriter’sownpersonality,”HaroldMassingham
said.OthersdidnotexplicitlymakeadirecttothepassionatelypersonalstyleofSonsand
Lovers.SomeofLawrence’scontemporariesinsistonseeingthenovelSonsandLoversas
theauthor’sonly-slightly-revisedpersonalhistory;
othersdonot,althoughonecomplains
aboutthewriter’slackof“scientificdetachment.”Someofthereviewsbelievethebookto
beaboutthetragic“wastage”ofWalterMorel;
othersthinktheauthoriswritingagainsthis
ownbiologicalfather.Then,too,therearecriticswhoseemedtosensethattheinconsistent
reviewsofthebookaremadepossiblebytheworkitself,whichisaboutemotionaloxymoron,passionatecontradictions.BeforeanyreviewersfullyinsistedupontheautobiographicalnatureofSonsandLovers.“InordertounderstandMr.Lawrencefully,we
mustgobeyondhisworks,”AlfredKuttnersuggestedinAFreudianAppreciationinSons
andLovers.InsistingonthestrongsimilaritybetweenSonsandLoversandLawrence’s
earliernovelsandlovepoems,Kuttnerdeclaredalltheseworkstobe“expressionsofthe
samepersonalexperience,”namely,Lawrence’s“hatred”forhis“father.”Havingsaidthis,
Kuttnerwentevenfurther,suggestingthatwhatLawrence“particularizessopassionately”is
whatFreud,moregenerally,“hasprovedbeyondcavil,”namely,that“thechild’s
attachmenttotheparentoftheoppositesexbecomestheprototypeofalllaterloverelations.”
AccordingtoShowalterE,saidinSexualAnarchy,thatLawrencewasdifficultto
acceptwomenhavetheirownthoughts,inthepoemshehadwrittenhaveshowntheanger,resentment,fearandpityoffemale.Atthesametime,thisfigurealsoexpressedtheviewthatmaleshouldbethedominantpositionintherelationshipbetweenmenandwomen,Lawrencealsoexpressedinthetexttheresentmentofpossessive,strongandfeistywomen.Lawrencearticulatedauniqueviewofreligion:
Thattheonlywaytosavemankindistheunificationofbodyandmind,theperfectharmonyofsexandthemale-dominatedmarriage.
Onlywhenitreachesthenaturalbalancebetweenthetwoandtherespectwitheachother,
lifeisbeaccepted.Inotherwords,onlythelovewhichreachesboththephysicalandmentalcoordinationandtherespectwitheachotheristruelove.
AccordingtoMargaretStorch,saidinImagesofWomeninSonsandLovers,thethree
characters,GertrudeMorel,MiriamLeviersandClaraDawes,Theoutstandingfeatureofthesewomenisthehighaspiration(Theyarealldissatisfiedwiththeirnarrowandsmalllife
circles.Theyhopetocastofftheirformerdrab1ifeandtosearchforequalitywithmen.AccordingtoJackson,Dennis,andFledaBrownJackson,saidinCriticalEssaysonD.H.
Lawrence,MrsMorel’sdiligentstrivingforhighersocialstandingandherallanxietiesfor
prosperousandcivilizedlifegreatlyreflectherhighaspiration.Inaddition,heryearningforknowledgecanalsoshowherhighaspiration.Miriamisalsolongingforknowledgeandregardslearningknowledgeastheonlyaccesstochangehersocialstatus.Andshebelieves
thatinthiswayitcanestablishherself-confidenceandself-respect.Sheconsideredherself
