Onbehalfofournation,Isalutemypredecessor,PresidentBush,forhishalf-centuryofservicetoAmerica.AndIthankthemillionsofmenandwomenwhosesteadfastnessandsacrifice

triumphedoverDepression,fascismandCommunism.

Today,agenerationraisedintheshadowsoftheColdWarassumesnewresponsibilitiesinaworldwarmedbythesunshineoffreedombutthreatenedstillbyancienthatredsandnewplagues.

Raisedinunrivaledprosperity,weinheritaneconomythatisstilltheworld'

sstrongest,butisweakenedbybusinessfailures,stagnantwages,increasinginequality,anddeepdivisions

amongourpeople.

WhenGeorgeWashingtonfirsttooktheoathIhavejustsworntouphold,newstraveledslowlyacrossthelandbyhorsebackandacrosstheoceanbyboat.Now,thesightsandsoundsofthis

ceremonyarebroadcastinstantaneouslytobillionsaroundtheworld.

Communicationsandcommerceareglobal;

investmentismobile;

technologyisalmostmagical;

andambitionforabetterlifeisnowuniversal.Weearnourlivelihoodinpeacefulcompetition

withpeopleallacrosstheearth.

Profoundandpowerfulforcesareshakingandremakingourworld,andtheurgentquestionofourtimeiswhetherwecanmakechangeourfriendandnotourenemy.

ThisnewworldhasalreadyenrichedthelivesofmillionsofAmericanswhoareabletocompeteandwininit.Butwhenmostpeopleareworkingharderforless;

whenotherscannotworkatall;

whenthecostofhealthcaredevastatesfamiliesandthreatenstobankruptmanyofourenterprises,greatandsmall;

whenfearofcrimerobslaw-abidingcitizensoftheirfreedom;

andwhen

millionsofpoorchildrencannotevenimaginetheliveswearecallingthemtolead,wehavenotmadechangeourfriend.

Weknowwehavetofacehardtruthsandtakestrongsteps.Butwehavenotdoneso.Instead,wehavedrifted,andthatdriftinghaserodedourresources,fracturedoureconomy,andshakenour

confidence.

Thoughourchallengesarefearsome,soareourstrengths.AndAmericanshaveeverbeenarestless,questing,hopefulpeople.Wemustbringtoourtasktodaythevisionandwillofthosewho

camebeforeus.

Fromourrevolution,theCivilWar,totheGreatDepressiontothecivilrightsmovement,ourpeoplehavealwaysmusteredthedeterminationtoconstructfromthesecrisesthepillarsofour

history.

ThomasJeffersonbelievedthattopreservetheveryfoundationsofournation,wewouldneeddramaticchangefromtimetotime.Well,myfellowcitizens,thisisourtime.Letusembraceit.

Ourdemocracymustbenotonlytheenvyoftheworldbuttheengineofourownrenewal.ThereisnothingwrongwithAmericathatcannotbecuredbywhatisrightwithAmerica.

Andsotoday,wepledgeanendtotheeraofdeadlockanddrift;

anewseasonofAmericanrenewalhasbegun.TorenewAmerica,wemustbebold.Wemustdowhatnogenerationhashadtodo

before.Wemustinvestmoreinourownpeople,intheirjobs,intheirfuture,andatthesametimecutourmassivedebt.Andwemustdosoinaworldinwhichwemustcompeteforevery

opportunity.Itwillnotbeeasy;

itwillrequiresacrifice.Butitcanbedone,anddonefairly,notchoosingsacrificeforitsownsake,butforourownsake.Wemustprovideforournation

thewayafamilyprovidesforitschildren.

OurFounderssawthemselvesinthelightofposterity.Wecandonoless.Anyonewhohaseverwatchedachild'

seyeswanderintosleepknowswhatposterityis.Posterityistheworldtocome;

theworldforwhomweholdourideals,fromwhomwehaveborrowedourplanet,andtowhomwebearsacredresponsibility.WemustdowhatAmericadoesbest:

offermoreopportunitytoalland

demandresponsibilityfromall.

Itistimetobreakthebadhabitofexpectingsomethingfornothing,fromourgovernmentorfromeachother.Letusalltakemoreresponsibility,notonlyforourselvesandourfamiliesbut

forourcommunitiesandourcountry.TorenewAmerica,wemustrevitalizeourdemocracy.
