Abstract
Itiscommonlyfoundthatyoungpeopletendtoadoptthepoliticalpartychoiceoftheirparents.However,farlessisknownabouttheapplicabilityofthistheorywheninvestigatingradicalrightsupport.UsingtheSwissHouseholdpaneldata(1999–2007),thisstudyempiricallyidentifiestherelationshipbetweenparents’preferencefortheSwissradicalrightpartySVPandtheirattitudestowardimmigrantsandtheEU,andtheiroffspring’spreferencefortheSVP.Disaggregatingfathers’andmothers’influencerevealsthatinparticular,mothers’SVPsupportplaysaroleinSVPsupportamongyoungpeople,evenaftercontrollingforeducationalsimilarities.Wealsodemonstratethatgirlsaremorelikelytobeinfluencedbytheirmothersthanareboys.Furthermore,parents’negativeattitudestowardtheEUexertapositiveinfluenceontheirchildren’sradicalrightvoting,independentoftheirvotingpattern.

Background
Chinesemidwiferyisunderthreatandhasbeendenigrated,withvirtuallyallmidwivespractisinginthelabourwards.
Aims
Thepresentstudyaimstoinformthedevelopmentofaproposedcontinuingprofessionaleducationprogramme.
Method
Questionnairesurveysandsemi-structuredinterviewswereusedtoinvestigatetheviewsofnewmothersaftervaginalbirthsandmidwives.Thequestionsfocussedonmidwives'
education,practiceandmothers'
experienceandknowledgeofmaternitycare.Datawereanalysedusingdescriptivestatisticaltechniques.
Participants
Fiveresearchers,253midwivesand214women.
Settings
Tenmaternityunits/hospitalsinsevenChinesecities.
Findings
Bothmothersandmidwivesvaluedcontinuityofmidwiferycare.Themajorityofmidwiveswereobstetricnursingeducated;
one-fifthhadamidwiferybackground.Asmallerminorityhadamaternity/childcareorobstetriceducation.Midwiferyeducationismedico/nursingorientated,withonly11.6%ofthecurriculummidwifery-oriented.
Discussion
Theperceiveddifferentneedsreflectthedifferentorientationsoftherespondents.Theprogrammeshouldbestructuredtomeetmothers'
needs,cultivatemidwives'
lifelonglearningcapacity,andencourageevidence-basedpractice.
Conclusion
ThestudyhasshownafundamentalprobleminChinesemidwiferyeducation,inthatmidwivesdonothaveaccesstoevidence-basedmaterial.Self-directedlearningwithportfolioassessmentislikelytoproveusefulfortheproposedprogramme;
thismayfacilitatemidwives'
personal/professionaldevelopmenttoupdatetheirknowledge,understandingandcompetencetowardstheirfullroleasmidwives.
