Surprisingnewresearchsuggeststhathappinessdoesindeedhaveapleasantsmell,andthattheexperienceofhappinesscanbetransmitted(传播)throughsmell.
Forthestudy,12youngmenwereshownvideosmeanttobringaboutavarietyofemotionswhileresearcherscollectedsweatsamples(样本)fromthem.Allofthemenwerehealthyandnoneofthemweredrugusersorsmokers,andallwereaskedtoabstainfromdrinkingoreatingsmellyfoodsduringthestudyperiod.
Thosesweatsampleswerethengivento36equallyhealthyyoungwomentosmell,whileresearchersobservedtheirreactions.Onlywomenwereselectedtosmellthesamples,obviouslybecausepreviousresearchhasshownthatwomenhaveabettersenseofsmellthanmenandarealsomoresensitive(敏感的)toemotionalsignaling.
“Whenapersonishappy,hissweatbringsaboutastatesimilartohappinessinsomebodywhobreathesthissmell,”saidstudyco-authorGunSemin,aprofessoratKocUniversityinTurkey.
Thisisafascinatingfindingbecauseitnotonlymeansthathappinessdoeshaveapleasantsmell,butthatthesmellisabletopasstheemotiontoothers.Thestudyalsofoundthatotheremotions,suchasfear,seemtocarryasmelltoo.Thisensurespreviousresearchsuggestingthatsomenegative(消极的)emotionshaveasmell,butitisthefirsttimethishasprovedtobetrueofpositivefeelings.
Researchershavenotisolated(分离)exactlywhatthechemicalcompoundforthehappinesssmellis,butyoumightimaginehowtomakeuseofsuchafinding.Happinessperfumes,forinstance,couldbeinvented.Scent
