Bytheendofthecenturystudentswerebeingadvisedtohavesomenewideasofbooksandtouseskillsinreadingthemwhichwerenotproper,ifnotimpossible,fortheoralreader.Thesocial,cultural,andtechnologicaldevelopmentsinthecenturyhadgreatlychangedwhattheterm"reading"referredto.
