vegatheredacollectionofstunningimagesofthegardens,sofeastyoureyesherewhileyouwaitforthisrooftophaventoopentothepublicagain.

Thegardens,locatedatoptheBritishEmpireBuilding,theMaisonFrancaise,andthesetbacksofothercentralbuildings,wereplannedandbuiltwhentheCenterwasfirsterected.DeveloperJohnR.ToddandarchitectRaymondHoodwantedthebuildings’designtobeaestheticallypleasingforthetenantsandpassers-by,andtheyfeltthattheformalgardenswouldbeaspecialtreatforthethousandsofemployeesworkingintheCenter.Originally,theyhadanevenmoreelaborateideainmind,envisioningthenetworkofrooftopgardensconnectedbypedestrianbridges,likeningthemtothehanginggardensofBabylon.

Justbylookingattheseimages,youcantellthatthesearenotrooftopgardensthatwerejustthrownontopofabuilding.Theelaboratefountainpools,stoneplanters,andvegetationaremostdefinitelynotthetypesofstructuresyouseeonrooftopgardenstoday.Tosupportthethousandsoftonsofextraweightfromthepipes,soil,andpumps,theRockefellerCenter’sroofingwasreinforcedwithextrasteel.

Likewesaidbefore,thegardensareclosedtothepublic,butforafewyearsrunning,theywereopenedfortheOpenHouseNewYorkweekend,duringwhichmanyofthesepicturesweretaken.Unfortunately,theyhavenotbeenapartofOHNYforthelastcoupleyears,anditdoesn’tlookliketheywillbethisyeareither.Butoccasionally,companiespayaprettypennyandinvitethepublicintothegardens.Theycanalsoberentedforweddingsandprivateevents,butwecan’tevenbegintoguesshowmuchthatwouldcost.

NewYorkologyunearthedahistorybookofRockefellerCenter,whichrevealedthatthegardenswereoriginallyopentothepublic,andtheoperatingcostslosttheCenter$45,000everyyear.Hereisapassagefromthebookthatdescribesthegardensastheywerebuilt:

TheroofsonthefourlowbuildingsonFifthweredoneupinstylesappropriatetothebuildings’themes—cobblestonesfromthestreetsofItaliantownsandtwostoneplaquesfromtheRomanForumframedtheplantingsonthePalazzad’Italia,forinstance,andtheBritishEmpire’sBuilding’sumbrella-toppedgardentables,wheretenantscouldtaketeainclementweather,weresurroundedbywell-trimmedyewsandotherhedgeplants.Butthegardensmeanderingaroundtheeleventh-floorsetback,ontheRCAbuilding,140feetabovestreetlevel,weresolavishtheymadethetopsofthelowbuildingslooklikesuburbanbackyards.
