Languageisusedtointerchangethoughtsandfeelings.Teacherswhoteachthesamematerialgetdifferenteffect.Someteacherscantotallyactivatetheirstudents,andmaketheclassroomatmosphereratherlively,butsometeachersjustcannotgetridofdepressingclassroomatmosphere.Oneofthemainreasonsliesintheteacher’snonverbalbehavior.Nonverbalbehaviorisaformofsilentcommunication.Intheclassroom,nonverbalbehaviorincludesteacher’sbodylanguage,paralanguage,proxemicsandsoforth.In1872,scientificresearchonnonverbalcommunicationandbehaviorbeganwiththepublicationofCharlesDarwin’sTheExpressionoftheEmotionsinManandAnimals.ThesilentlanguagebyDr.Edward.T.Hall,AFieldGuidetoHumanBehaviorbyMorrisDManwatchingandBodyLanguagebyJvlinsFastarealltranslatedintodifferentlanguages.InChina,someexpertsstartedtheirresearchonnonverbalbehaviorinthelate1980s.However,booksorjournalspublishedathomeorabroadconcernmoreaboutthefunctionsinthetermsofinterpersonalcommunication.Therearejustfewbookswrittenfortheteacherstoread.Thereisnodoubtthatmanyteacherspaylittleattentiontononverbalbehavior.Theyaremoreusedtousingverballanguagetointerchangetheirthoughtsandfeelings.Sothisthesisiswrittentohelpteachersrealizethegreatimportanceandeffectualfunctionsofnonverbalbehavior.Thisessayaimstochangetheirviewonnonverbalbehaviorandraisesomeinterestinusingnonverbalbehavior.
2.Ageneraloverviewofteacher’snonverbalbehavior
2.1Definitionofnonverbalbehavior
“Whatisnonverbalbehavior?
”Nonverbalbehavioriscomplex.Itbothincludesbehaviorandcommunication.Itmaybesharedbetweenpeopleorwithinpeople.Itmaybeintentionalorunintentional.Nonverbalbehaviorisusuallyunderstoodasaprocessofcommunicationthroughsendingandreceivingwordlessmessages.Nonverbalbehaviorcanbecommunicatedthroughgesture,bybodylanguageorposture,byfacialexpressionandeyecontact.Nonverbalbehaviorcanbecommunicatedthroughobjectcommunicationsuchasclothing,hairstylesorevenarchitecture,symbolsandinfographics.Speechcontainsnonverbalelementsknownasparalanguage,includingvoicequality,emotionandspeakingstyle,aswellasprosodicfeaturessuchasrhythm,intonationandstress.
2.2Importanceofnonverbalbehavior
ResearchpublishedbytheNationalEducationAssociationstatesthat82%ofourcommunicationaseducatorsisnonverbal.Itiswellknownthatspeechisonlyonepartofcommunication,yetteachersoftenforgetaboutorunderestimatetheimportanceofnon-verbalcommunicationintheirownandtheirstudents'
performance.Nonverbalbehaviorisveryimportantinmanyaspects.
Firstly,nonverbalbehaviorcancontributesclassroommanagement.Usingnonverbaltechniquesintheclassroomallowsateachertomanagefrominfluence,notpower.Nonverbalbehaviorcharacterizedbysilenceprovidesasaferclassroomenvironmentforstudentandteacher.
Secondly,nonverbalbehaviorcanestablishharmoniousteacher-studentrelationships.Managingstudentswithnonverbaltechniquespreservesrelationships.Besides,byformingkindfacialexpression,makinggentleeyecontact,holdingopenposture,etc.teachersgetsclosertotheirstudents.Andgradually,itwillbuildabroadandfriendlybridgebetweenteacherandhisstudents.

Finally,nonverbalbehaviorcanhelpteacherssetagoodexample.Traditionally,youngstudentstendtotrustandlearnfromtheirteachers.Thereisanoldsaying,“actionsspeaklouderthanwords”.Thoughnonverbalbehavioriswordless,itispowerfulenoughtoinfluencestudents.So,teachersshouldbehavewelltosetagoodexampleforhisstudentstolearnfrom.
