By1949,theFrenchhadbeguntorecover(恢复)fromthewar.TheMerciTrainwastheirwayofsaying“thankyou”toAmerica.Frenchpeoplehadfilledtheboxcarswithgifts.Mostofthemwerepersonal,likehand-madetoys,children’sdrawings,orpostcards.Buttheboxcarsthemselveswereperhapsthemostmeaningfulofthegifts.Oneachcar,theFrenchpeoplehadpaintedthepicturesofalltheir40provinces.withanAmericaneagleonthefront.TheboxcarsweretakentoeachstateofAmerica,wheretheywerewarmlygreeted.
