Forthemajorityofintellectualdisabilities,thereisnoidentifiablecausebuttherearesomecausesthatarewelldocumented.Theyinclude:
braindamageatbirthduetolackofoxygen—prolongedlaborduringchildbirth;
braindamagebeforebirthduetofactorssuchasrubella(风疹),drugordiet-relatedproblems;
damageafterbirthduetoillnessessuchasencephalitis(脑膜炎)oraccident;
hereditarydefectsinthegenes;
