IncollegeIhadbeentaughtthatasuccessfuleducatorshouldignorebadbehavior.SoIdid,confidentthat,asthetextbookhadsaid,thebadbehaviorwoulddisappearasIgavemystudentspositiveattention.Itsoundsreasonable,butthetextevidentlyignoredthefactthathumans,particularlyteenagers,rarelyseemreasonable.Bythetimemyboss,whowasalsomytaskmaster,knowntobethestrictest,mostdemanding,mostquicktofireinexperiencedteachers,cameintotheclassroomtoobserveme,thestudentsexhibitedverylittlegoodbehaviortopraise.
