Theplanfortheislandwasextraordinary.Itwastohostseveralhotels,shoppingmalls,restaurants,andhomes.Althoughtheinitialplanwastobuildtheislandfromconcrete(水泥),adecisionwastakentocreateitfromsandandgravel(砾石),soastogiveitanaturallook.

Tomakesurethatthisprojectwasasuccess,thebestengineersfromacrosstheworldwereemployed.EngineersfromHollandformedthemajorityinthisgroup.Tobeginwith,theengineerscalculatedthestrengthofstormsatsea,andalsotheexpectedamountofriseinwaterlevelsduetoglobalwarming.Andthentheyfoundthat,theproposedlocationfortheislandwasneitherverywidenordeep.

Oneofthedifficultiestheengineerscameacrosswastoputsandontheseabedtocreatethebreakwater(防浪堤).Findingtherightsandfortheprojectwasalsoadauntingtask,asthesandfromDubai’sdesertswastoofine.Instead,sandfromtheseawasused,asitwascoarser(粗糙).Oncethebreakwaterwasbuilt,constructionoftheislandbegan.

ThePalmIslandarereallyimpressiveintermsofengineering.However,theseprojectsaresolargethattheymayhavechangedtheecologyoftheregion.Also,animmenseamountofmoneyandresourcesgointomaintainingtheislands,whichisamajorconcernatthemoment.OnlytimewilltellifbuildingthePalmIslandswasactuallyagooddecision.

ThewriterConstanceCaryHarrisonaskedLazarus,whowas34atthetime,towriteapoemtohelpraisemoneyfortheStatueofLibertybasefund,Lazarus,atfirst,wasnotinterestedinwritingsomethingonassignment.

HarrisonlaterrecalledthatsheencouragedLazarustochangehermindbysaying,"Thinkofthatgooddessstandingonherbasedownthereinthebay,andholdinghertorchouttothoseRussianRefugeesofyoursthatyouaresofondofvisitingatWard’sIsland."
