ROCKCLIMBING:

Thisistheactivityofclimbingupanddownverysteeprockformations.Thissportneedsspecialequipmenttokeeptheclimberssafe.Aclimberhastohavegreatstrengthofbodyandmind.Itisbettertoclimbinsmallgroups,sothatthereissomeonetohelpinthecaseofanemergency.

Herchancecamein1854whenBritainwenttowarwithRussiainaplacecalledtheCrimea.Florencewasaskedtotakeagroupofnursestolookafterthesickandwoundedsoldiers.Thehospitalsweredirty,andtherewasnotenoughmedicine.Therewerenotenoughbeds,sosomepeoplewerejustlyingonragsinthemud.Therewassomuchsicknessthatthedoctorscouldnottreatallthesoldiers.

Florenceandherteamcleanedthehospitalroomsandbeds.Theymadesurethatthebandageswerecleanandthatthesoldiersgetenoughmedicine.Thearmywasunhappybecausetherewerewomensoclosetothefighting.Theygavethenursesalotoftrouble.Florenceandherteamworkedhard.Consequently,Florencebecamefamousas“TheLadyoftheLamp”.

Afterthewar,FlorencereturnedtoLondonanationalhero.Agreatwelcomewaspreparedforher,butsheslippedintothecountryunnoticed.Sheopenedaschooltoteachnurseshowtolookaftertheirpatientsproperly.SheneverreallygotbetterfromtheillnessthatshehadintheCrimeaandshediedin1910.
