ThanksgivingDayisatimeeachyear,datingbacktoourfounding,whenwelayasidethetroublesanddisagreementsofthedayandbowourheadsinhumblerecognitionoftheprovidencebestoweduponourNation.Amidsttheuncertaintyofafledglingexperimentindemocracy,PresidentGeorgeWashingtondeclaredthefirstThanksgivinginAmerica,recountingtheblessingsoftranquility,union,andplentythatshineduponouryoungcountry.InthedarkdaysoftheCivilWarwhenthefateofourUnionwasindoubt,PresidentAbrahamLincolnproclaimedaThanksgivingDay,callingfor"theAlmightyhand"tohealandrestoreourNation.
Inconfrontingthechallengesofourday,wemustdrawstrengthfromtheresolveofpreviousgenerationswhofacedtheirownstrugglesandtakecomfortinknowingabrighterdayhasalwaysdawnedonourgreatland.Aswestandatthecloseofoneyearandlooktothepromiseofthenext,weliftupourheartsingratitudetoGodforourmanyblessings,foroneanother,andforourNation.ThisThanksgivingDay,werememberthatthefreedomsandsecurityweenjoyasAmericansareprotectedbythebravemenandwomenoftheUnitedStatesArmedForces.Thesepatriotsarewillingtolaydowntheirlivesinourdefense,andtheyandtheirfamiliesdeserveourprofoundgratitudefortheirserviceandsacrifice.
Thisharvestseason,wearealsoremindedofthoseexperiencingthepangsofhungerorthehardshipofeconomicinsecurity.Letusreturnthekindnessandgenerositywehaveseenthroughouttheyearbyhelpingourfellowcitizensweatherthestormsofourday.
AsAmericansgatherforthetime-honoredThanksgivingDaymeal,letusrejoiceintheabundancethatgracesourtables,inthesimplegiftsthatmarkourdays,inthelovedoneswhoenrichourlives,andinthegiftsofagraciousGod.Letusrecallthatourforebearsmettheirchallengeswithhopeandanunfailingspirit,andletusresolvetodothesame.
