  AbelovedAmericantradition,ThanksgivingDayoffersustheopportunitytofocusourthoughtsonthegracethathasbeenextendedtoourpeopleandourcountry.ThisspiritbroughttogetherthenewlyarrivedPilgrimsandtheWampanoagtribe--whohadbeenlivingandthrivingaroundPlymouth,Massachusettsforthousandsofyears--inanautumnharvestfeastcenturiesago.ThisThanksgivingDay,wereflectonthecompassionandcontributionsofNativeAmericans,whoseskillinagriculturehelpedtheearlycolonistssurvive,andwhoserichculturecontinuestoaddtoourNation'sheritage.Wealsopauseournormalpursuitsonthisdayandjoininaspiritoffellowshipandgratitudefortheyear'sbountiesandblessings.

  ThanksgivingDayisatimeeachyear,datingbacktoourfounding,whenwelayasidethetroublesanddisagreementsofthedayandbowourheadsinhumblerecognitionoftheprovidencebestoweduponourNation.Amidsttheuncertaintyofafledglingexperimentindemocracy,PresidentGeorgeWashingtondeclaredthefirstThanksgivinginAmerica,recountingtheblessingsoftranquility,union,andplentythatshineduponouryoungcountry.InthedarkdaysoftheCivilWarwhenthefateofourUnionwasindoubt,PresidentAbrahamLincolnproclaimedaThanksgivingDay,callingfor"theAlmightyhand"tohealandrestoreourNation.

  Inconfrontingthechallengesofourday,wemustdrawstrengthfromtheresolveofpreviousgenerationswhofacedtheirownstrugglesandtakecomfortinknowingabrighterdayhasalwaysdawnedonourgreatland.Aswestandatthecloseofoneyearandlooktothepromiseofthenext,weliftupourheartsingratitudetoGodforourmanyblessings,foroneanother,andforourNation.ThisThanksgivingDay,werememberthatthefreedomsandsecurityweenjoyasAmericansareprotectedbythebravemenandwomenoftheUnitedStatesArmedForces.Thesepatriotsarewillingtolaydowntheirlivesinourdefense,andtheyandtheirfamiliesdeserveourprofoundgratitudefortheirserviceandsacrifice.

  Thisharvestseason,wearealsoremindedofthoseexperiencingthepangsofhungerorthehardshipofeconomicinsecurity.Letusreturnthekindnessandgenerositywehaveseenthroughouttheyearbyhelpingourfellowcitizensweatherthestormsofourday.

  AsAmericansgatherforthetime-honoredThanksgivingDaymeal,letusrejoiceintheabundancethatgracesourtables,inthesimplegiftsthatmarkourdays,inthelovedoneswhoenrichourlives,andinthegiftsofagraciousGod.Letusrecallthatourforebearsmettheirchallengeswithhopeandanunfailingspirit,andletusresolvetodothesame.

  NOW,THEREFORE,I,BARACKOBAMA,PresidentoftheUnitedStatesofAmerica,byvirtueoftheauthorityvestedinmebytheConstitutionandthelawsoftheUnitedStates,doherebyproclaimThursday,November25,20__,asaNationalDayofThanksgiving.IencourageallthepeopleoftheUnitedStatestocometogether--whetherinourhomes,placesofworship,communitycenters,oranyplaceoffellowshipforfriendsandneighbors--togivethanksforallwehavereceivedinthepastyear,toexpressappreciationtothosewhoselivesenrichourown,andtoshareourbountywithothers.

  Allsummerlongtheywaitedfortheharvestswithgreatanxiety,knowingthattheirlivesandthefutureexistenceofthecolonydependedonthecomingharvest.Finallythefieldsproducedayieldrichbeyondexpectations.AndthereforeitwasdecidedthatadayofthanksgivingtotheLordbefixed.Yearslater,PresidentoftheUnitedStatesproclaimedthefourthThursdayofNovemberasThanksgivingDayeveryyear.ThecelebrationofThanksgivingDayhasbeenobservedonthatdateuntiltoday.
