ClassisapotentforceinhealthandlongevityintheUnitedStates.Themoreeducationandincomepeoplehave,thelesslikelytheyaretohaveanddieofheartdisease,strokes,diabetesandmanytypesofcancer.Upper-middle-classAmericanslivelongerandinbetterhealththanmiddle-classAmericans,wholivelongerandbetterthanthoseatthebottom.Andthegapsarewidening,saypeoplewhohaveresearchedsocialfactorsinhealth.

AsadvancesinmedicineanddiseasepreventionhaveincreasedlifeexpectancyintheUnitedStates,thebenefitshavedisproportionatelygonetopeoplewitheducation,money,goodjobsandconnections.Theyarealmostinvariablyinthebestpositiontolearnnewinformationearly,modifytheirbehavior,takeadvantageofthelatesttreatmentsandhavethecostcoveredbyinsurance.

Manyriskfactorsforchronicdiseasesarenowmorecommonamongthelesseducatedthanthebettereducated.Smokinghasdroppedsharplyamongthebettereducated,butnotamongtheless.Physicalinactivityismorethantwiceascommonamonghighschooldropoutsasamongcollegegraduates.Lower-incomewomenaremorelikelythanotherwomentobeoverweight,thoughthepatternamongmenmaybetheopposite.
