MillionsofpeopleintheHimalayasareindangerofmassiveearthquakes,accordingtoscientistsintheUSandIndia.TheysaygreatearthquakesaretheonlyreleaseforstressthathasbeenbuildingwithintheEarth’scrustalongthesouthernedgeoftheHimalayasfordecades.

Thisregionhasbeenstruckwithlargeearthquakeseveryfewdecadessincetheearlynineteenthcentury.Thefaultlineshavebeensilentsince1950,whenthebiggestearthquakewithinasinglecontinentinrecordedhistoryshookAssam.Butthepressurehasbeenmounting.

PortionsoftheHimalayanregionhavebeeninactiveforpossiblyseveralcenturies.Ifearthquakeshappenintheseareas,theycouldbecatastrophic.Workingfromthehumancostofearlierearthquakesinthelightoftoday’spopulationnumbers,Bilham’steamestimates200,000peoplecouldbekilledinasingleearthquake.However,ifithappenednearoneofthehugecitiesontheGangesPlain,theybelievefatalitiescouldbetentimesgreater.

TheregionsouthoftheHimalayasisearthquake-pronebecausetheIndiansub-continentiscollidingwiththeEurasianplatetothenorth.Thisprocessstartedatleast50millionyearsago,creatingthemountainrangeandtheQingzangGaoyuan.

Atthepointwherethetwoplatesconverge,theIndianoneplungesbelowtheEurasian.Astheplatespushtogether,pressurebuilds,untiltheIndianplaterollssuddenlydownwards,sendingagreatearthquakereechoingacrosshundredsofkilometers.Theconvergenceofthetwoplatesisrelativelyrapid—abouttwocentimetersayear.ManyregionsofthecentralHimalayasnowhaveatleastfourmetersofconvergence,whichwouldcauseagreatearthquakewhenreleased.Thisamountofslipisbelievedtohaveoccurredinthegreatearthquakeof1934thathittheregionofBihar,India,andwesternNepal.

Whilecaringforterminallyillpatientscanberewarding,itcanalsobediscouraging.Familiesprovidethemajorityofcare,evennursingservices,withouttrainingorsupport.AccordingtoagroundbreakingstudypublishedintheNewEnglandJournalofMedicine,themajorityofcarefortheterminallyillisprovidedbyfemalefamilymembers,notprofessionalhealthcareproviders.

“Womenaredoublyaffectedbytheneedforcareattheendoflife.Almostthreequartersofallcarefordyingpatientswasprovidedbywomen.Atthesametime,womenwhoneededcarereceivedlessassistancefromfamilymembersthanmenandweremorelikelytohavetopayforassistance.”
