ThisarticleaimstoquantifytheriskfactorsassociatedwiththehumancasesofH5N1avianinfluenzainSouth-eastAsiancountriesandChina;adangerousregionforthisdiseasethathasthepotentialforapandemicoutbreak.

Studydesign

Astatisticalmodelwithtimeandspatialdimensionswasbuilttocapturetheinternationalspreadpatternsofthisdisease.

Methods

Thegridsearchmethodwasusedtofitthemodelwith2004–2006data.Thegridsearchapproachisasimpleprocedurethatallowsthefitofanyfunctiontodata.

Results

Thisstudyfoundthat:

（1）whenthenumberofdomesticH5N1humancasesincreasesbyonepersoninacertaintimeperiod,thechancethatthecountrywillhaveahumancaseinthenextperiodincreasesby22.10%;

（2）whenthenumberofhumancasesinaneighbouringcountryincreasesbyonepersoninacertaintimeperiod,thechancethatthecountrywillhaveahumancaseinthenextperiodincreasesby1.62%;（3）whenthenumberofaviancasesinaneighbouringcountryincreasesbyone,thechancethatthecountrywillhaveahumancaseincreasesby0.02%;（4）asthehumanpopulationincreasesbyoneunit,thechancethatthecountrywillhaveahumancaseincreasesby0.10%;（5）whenthequantityofimportedpoultryincreasesby1000metrictons,thechancethatthecountrywillhaveahumancaseincreasesby0.03%;（6）whentheoutbreakofthediseaseamongdomesticbirdsincreasesbyone,thechancethatthecountrywillhaveahumancaseincreasesby0.19%;andfinally（7）whenthenumberofbirdsdestroyedincreasesby1000,thechancethatthecountrywillhaveahumancasedecreasesby0.30%.

Conclusions

Thesefindingsshednewlightonthespatiotemporalcharacteristicsoftheepidemic,andthusneedtobetakenintoconsiderationininterdisciplinaryandscientificdiscussionofthedisease.

ThispaperanalyzeschangesinpovertyandinequalityintheMiddleEastandNorthAfrica.Itfindsthatthestructuralrelationshipbetweenpovertyreduction,incomegrowthanddistributionisthesameforMENAandotherdevelopingeconomies.Priorto1985rapidgrowthsharplyreducedpoverty.After1985,despiteverylowincomegrowth,arisingshareofincomeaccruingtothelowestquintilemeantthattheaverageincomeofthepoorrosemorerapidlythanthatofthenon-poor.Theseunusualpovertydynamicswereprimarilyduetointernationalmigration.Remittancesbothincreasedpercapitaincomesinlaborexportingcountriesandincreasedtheshareofincomeaccruingtothepoor.
