ThisarticleaimstoquantifytheriskfactorsassociatedwiththehumancasesofH5N1avianinfluenzainSouth-eastAsiancountriesandChina;adangerousregionforthisdiseasethathasthepotentialforapandemicoutbreak.
Studydesign
Astatisticalmodelwithtimeandspatialdimensionswasbuilttocapturetheinternationalspreadpatternsofthisdisease.
Methods
Thegridsearchmethodwasusedtofitthemodelwith2004–2006data.Thegridsearchapproachisasimpleprocedurethatallowsthefitofanyfunctiontodata.
Results
Thisstudyfoundthat:
(1)whenthenumberofdomesticH5N1humancasesincreasesbyonepersoninacertaintimeperiod,thechancethatthecountrywillhaveahumancaseinthenextperiodincreasesby22.10%;
(2)whenthenumberofhumancasesinaneighbouringcountryincreasesbyonepersoninacertaintimeperiod,thechancethatthecountrywillhaveahumancaseinthenextperiodincreasesby1.62%;(3)whenthenumberofaviancasesinaneighbouringcountryincreasesbyone,thechancethatthecountrywillhaveahumancaseincreasesby0.02%;(4)asthehumanpopulationincreasesbyoneunit,thechancethatthecountrywillhaveahumancaseincreasesby0.10%;(5)whenthequantityofimportedpoultryincreasesby1000metrictons,thechancethatthecountrywillhaveahumancaseincreasesby0.03%;(6)whentheoutbreakofthediseaseamongdomesticbirdsincreasesbyone,thechancethatthecountrywillhaveahumancaseincreasesby0.19%;andfinally(7)whenthenumberofbirdsdestroyedincreasesby1000,thechancethatthecountrywillhaveahumancasedecreasesby0.30%.
Conclusions
Thesefindingsshednewlightonthespatiotemporalcharacteristicsoftheepidemic,andthusneedtobetakenintoconsiderationininterdisciplinaryandscientificdiscussionofthedisease.

ThispaperanalyzeschangesinpovertyandinequalityintheMiddleEastandNorthAfrica.Itfindsthatthestructuralrelationshipbetweenpovertyreduction,incomegrowthanddistributionisthesameforMENAandotherdevelopingeconomies.Priorto1985rapidgrowthsharplyreducedpoverty.After1985,despiteverylowincomegrowth,arisingshareofincomeaccruingtothelowestquintilemeantthattheaverageincomeofthepoorrosemorerapidlythanthatofthenon-poor.Theseunusualpovertydynamicswereprimarilyduetointernationalmigration.Remittancesbothincreasedpercapitaincomesinlaborexportingcountriesandincreasedtheshareofincomeaccruingtothepoor.
