JaneAusten(16December1775–18July1817)wasanEnglishnovelistAustenlivedthelowerfringesoftheEnglishlandedgentry.Shewaseducatedprimarilybyreading.Herartisticapprenticeshiplastedfromabandoned,andwroteandextensivelyrevisedthreemajornovelsandbeganafourth.From1811until1816,withthereleaseofSenseandSensibility(1811),PrideandPrejudice(1813),MansfieldPark(1814)andEmma(1815),Herworks,thoughusuallypopular,werefirstpublishedanonymouslyandbroughtandmanufacturers,whichthroughtheprofessionstothelowerranksofthelandedgentry.[CassandrawasamemberoftheprominentLeighfamily.Austen'simmediatefamilywaslarge:
sixbrothers—James,George,Edward,HenryThomas,FrancisWilliam(Frank),CharlesJohn—andonesister,CassandraElizabeth,who,likeJane,diedunmarried.

Austenwasbornon16December1775atSteventonrectoryandAfterafewmonthsatwithElizabethLittlewood,awomanlivingnearby,whonursedandraisedAustenforayearoreighteenmonthsIn1783,accordingtofamilytradition,JaneandCassandraweresenttoOxfordtobeeducatedbyMrs.AnnCawleyandtheymovedwithlaterintheyear.BothgirlscaughttyphusandJanenearlydied.Austenwassubsequentlyeducatedat1785.ByDecember1786,JaneandCassandraacquiredtheremainderofbyreadingbooks,guidedby.Fromwhenshewassevenuntilshewasthirteen.

Perhapsasearlyas1787,Austenbegantowritepoems,stories,andplaysforandcontinuedtoworkonthesepiecesaslateastheperiod1809–1811.
Adulthood
AsAustengrewintoadulthood,shecontinuedtoliveatofniecesFannyCatherineandJaneAnnaElizabeth.Austenwasparticularlyproudofmeantdancing,Janewasfondofdancing,andexcelledinit".Between1793and1795,AustenwroteLadySusan,ashortepistolarynovel.
Earlynovels
Withoutsurvivingoriginalmanuscripts,thereisnowaytoknowthenovelpublishedin1811asSenseandSensibility.Austenbeganworkonasecondnovel,FirstImpressions,in1796.ShecompletedtheinitialdraftinAugust1797whenshewasonly21(itlaterbecamePrideandPrejudice);aswithallofreadtheworkaloudtoitanditbecamean"establishedfavourite".Atthistime,beganwritingathirdnovelwiththeworkingtitleSusan.Austencompletedearly1803,HenryAustenofferedSusantoBenjaminCrosby,aLondonpublisher,whopaid£10forthecopyright.

InDecember1800,MrAustenunexpectedlyannouncedtoretirefromtheministry,leaveSteventon,andmovethefamilytoBath.AnindicationofAusten'sstateofmindisDecember1802,Austenreceivedproposalofmarriage.Bigg-WitherproposedandAustenaccepted.Bythenextmorning,Austenrealisedsheaprecariousfinancialsituation.

ThecottageinChawtonwhereJaneAustenlivedduringthelasteightyearsofmid-1815,AustenmovedtoJohnMurray,abetterknownLondonpublisher,[G]whopublishedEmmainDecember1815andasecondeditionofMansfieldParkinFebruary1816.EmmasoldwellbuttheneweditionofMansfieldParkdidnot,andthisfailureoffsetmostoftheprofitsAustenearnedonEmma.ThesewerethelastofAusten'snovelstobepublishedduringisburiedinWinchesterCathedral.JaneAusten'smemorialgravestoneinthenaveofWinchesterCathedral.Earlyin1816,JaneAustenbegantofeelunwell.Sheignoredtheusualroundoffamilyactivities.Bythemiddleofthatyear,andtobeganalong,slow,andirregulardeteriorationculminatingindiedinWinchesteron18July1817,attheageof41.
2.Sourcesofprideandprejudicefromtheperspectiveofexternalfactorsinprideandprejudice
2.1TheHistoricalBackground
ItwasbetweeneighteenthcenturyandnineteenthcenturythatthesocietywhereJaneAustenlivedchangeddramatically.Attheendofeighteenthcentury,
TheFrenchbourgeoisrevolutionshockedthewholeEuropeancontinent.In1805,TheBritishnavydefeatedtheFrenchandSpanishfleets.Sincethen,
Capitalistsexpandedcolonieswantonly.Since1930s,Britishindustrial
capitalismreplacedthoroughlydominationofthelandednobilities,which
becametocontrolthecountry'seconomicalandpoliticalmainpower.In1832,ParliamentaryreformmarkstheBritishIndustrialvictoryofbourgeois.TheworksofJaneAustenreflectthethreefactorsinthechangeoftimes:
Thefallofthepatriarchalsociety,Theriseofthebourgeoisie,Themodificationofreligiousbelief.
JaneAusteniscalledCenturyStarsatDawn,atthattime,shewroteballs,conversationsandmarriageorloveinsteadofsocialnewimportantthings,whichbroughtmuchcriticismfromcritics.Becauseofthisreason,PrideandPrejudicecomeintobeing.Fromthenovel,wecanfindthatJaneAustenpreferthelifeofthelandednobilities.AllofthesepavedthewayforJaneAusten’sandDarcy’sprideandprejudice.
FromtheperspectiveofthefallofthepatriarchalsocietyasapartoffindElizabethBennet’salldaughterswereworklessandtheywerealwaysatinheritedall,womeninheritednothing.Asaresultofthetwofactors,womenattachedcompletelythemselvestomen.Mrs.BennetteversaidthatTherichbachelorswhoevercoulddowastotry,certaineconomicbasis.JaneAustenwhowasinfluencedandrestrictedbyexperienceswasfondofrurallifeandoldsocialstructure.Thelandlordandcountrygentlemanappearedinthenovelasaowerwhomaintainedoldfeudalpastoralsystem.Darcywasatypicalrepresentative.Nomatterwhereatpeopleasarepresentativeofalandlordandacountrygentleman.
FromtheperspectiveofThemodificationofreligiousbelief,betweensixteenthcenturyandeighteenthcentury,Britishreligiousfaithchangedalot.Asaresultofthat,TheBritisharistocracyclaimkinshipwithBritisharistocracy.Darcywasaaristocrat.However,Elizabethwasaruralgirl.Therewasnopossibilityforthemtogetmarried.So,whentheymeteachother,theymustbepride,prejudicewitheachother.Bothofthemwantedtoself-esteem.Byanalysingthis,wefinditiseasytounderstandalloftheseprideandprejudice.
2.2Morality
AtthetimewhenJaneAustenlivedandwrote,mannersplayedaveryimportantroleinfamilyandsociallife.Mannersdependedonitsownproperty,whichdroveMoralityorpromotedMoralityordestroyedMorality.JaneAustenpresentedthesocialcustompictureofThenobilityandthecountrygentleman’smannersthroughthenovelinordertopresenttheirsocialcorevalueandthemoralcodeofconduct.IntheworldofPrideandPrejudice,TheBennettfamilyisanotablefamily.ThevulgarofMrs.Bennettandspeechanddeportment,EspeciallyintheNetherfieldball,drawonDarcy’sdespising.DarcylookeddownuponThemiddleclassfortheirarrogantmanners,especiallythearrogancetoElizabeth,whichviolatedgentlemanlinessthatapersonshouldrespectothers.TheRudeandtheunreasonablefromElizabethviolatedconductstandardofaLady.Moralityisastimuluswhichdrovepeopletodowhattheyshoulddoaccordingtomoralstandardinspiteoftheirrealfeelings,forexample,DarcylovedElizabeth.Butmoralstandard.thisrestrictedtheirfeels.Asaresult,DarcywaspridetoElizabeth.ElizabethwasprejudicetoDarcy.
2.3Wealth
Darcywasarichandpowerfulman,whothousandpoundsperyear.Darcy,whatwasthemostimportantthingwasinanotrichfamily,whichbroughtDarcy’sdespising.ItwasjustaboutWealththatbroughtaboutthatDarcywaspridetoElizabethandElizabethwasprejudicetoDarcy.Darcyalsothoughtthat,evenpersonality.So,eachtimewesawDarcy,wefoundDarcywasp
