FitzgeraldisoneofthemostoutstandingAmericannovelistsinthe20thcentury.TheGreatGatsby,whichwaselaboratelycreatedbyhim,iswidelyconsideredhisfinestwork.ThethesisaimstoanalyzethecharacterofJayGatsby,protagonistofthisnovel,andthustofurtherdiscusshowGatsby’scharacterinfluenceshisdestiny.Theauthorfirstbrieflysummarizesmaincontentofthisnovel,introducesFitzgerald’spersonalexperienceandanalyzesthewritingbackgroundofthisnovelaswellasthesymbolicsignificanceofitstragicoutcome.Inthediscussionparts,theauthordividesGatsby'scharacterintotwoaspects:

FrancisScottFitzgeraldwasbornintheyearof1896.HeiswidelyconsideredoneofthemostoutstandingAmericanwritersofthe20thcentury,whoseworksaretheparadigmaticwritingsofthe JazzAge.Throughouthisliterarycareer,hehascomposedfourwell-knownnovels,whichwasentitledThisSideofParadise, TheBeautifulandDamned,TheGreatGatsbyaswellasTenderIstheNight.TheLoveoftheLastTycoon,Fitzgerald’sfifthandunfinishednovel,waspublishedafterhisdeath.Undoubtedly,TheGreatGatsbyisthemostinfluentialamongallhisworks.Itstillhasaprofoundinfluenceworldwide.

AfterWorldWarⅠ,Americansocietyenjoyedunprecedentedlevelofprosperity.Inthe1920s,Americansabandonedthemselvestoholdsumptuouspartiesandhaveagoodtime.Theymovedtheirbodywiththerhythmsofthejazzmusicanddancedtothebeats.CrumbledtraditionalPuritanmoralityandflourishednewhedonisminthisage.Thisisthejazzage——atimeofwonder,atimeofart,atimeofbigspenders,butalsoamockeryofthetime.(Fitzgerald,flyleaf)Undersuchhistoricalbackground,TheGreatGatsbycameintoexistence.Tosummarize,TheGreatGatsbyisastorydepictingthedisillusionofAmericanDream.ItistoldthroughtheeyesofNickCarraway.

JayGatsby,ayoungmancomingfromruralNorthDakota,isborninanimpoverishedpeasantfamily.Throughouthispersistentefforts,hebecomesanimplausiblywealthymillionaireratherthanapennilessnobody.Inhiswell-decoratedmansion,heholdsextravagantpartiestoshowoffhiswealthandattractthegoldenbeauty——Daisy,whooncewasGatsby’sloverfiveyearsago.Theyreunionandre-loveeachotherwiththehelpofNick.InGatsby’smind,Daisyisaperfectladywithapureandinnocentheart.Nevertheless,sheisnolongertheDaisywhatsheusedtobe.Underhercharmingappearance,itisjustabodywithstupidandselfishsoul.Inatrafficaccident,DaisyhasstruckandkilledMyrtle,Tom'smistress.ButGatsbyintendstotaketheblameanyway.George,Myrtle'shusband,hasmistakenGatsbyforthehit-and-rundriverandevenMyrtle’ssecretlover.Withseveralgunshots,George,aso-calledlunaticendsbothGatsby’sandhisownlives.

ThegreatGatsbyisamirror,whichvividlyreflectsAmericans’lifeofthejazzage.Thescenesofroaringcrowd,extravagantpartiesandcorruptsocietyareperfectlyreproduced.Tosomeextent,italsocanbeinferredthattheGreatGatsbyistheepitomeofFitzgerald’slife.Theybothrisefromimpoverishedfamilies,theybothfallinlovewithbeautiescomingfromtheupperclassandtheybothendtheirlivesinstrategy.Itiswellacknowledgedthataman’sowncharactershapeshisfortune.SodoesGatsby.

Afterreadingthroughthisnovel,it’shardtotellwhethertheprotagonistGatsbyisagoodguyorabadguy.Somanyhighlightsdoexistinhischaracter.Butwehavetoadmitthattherearestillalotofdarksidesinhischaracter.InordertoanalyzeGatsby’scharacterfromanobjectiveangle,theauthordivideshischaracterintotwoaspects:

thepositivesideandthenegativeside.Theyarerespectivelystudiedinchapteroneandchaptertwo.Inchapterone,adeterminedandduteousGatsbywillbepresentedinfrontofyou.Inchaptertwo,anillusoryandinjudiciousGatsbyalsoemerges.Inthesetwochapters,alargenumberoffactsandtheoreticalargumentswillbeaddedtosupporttheauthor’sview.Attheendofthethesis,itnaturallycomestoaconclusionthatitisGatsby’scharacterthatdeterminedhisdestiny.Persistenceanddeterminationleadshimtosuccess.However,histragedyiscausedbyinjudiciousnessandunrealisticideal.

IntheGreatGatsby,FitzgeraldnarratestheremountofGatsbyfromanobjectiveperspective.Inhisdescription,avividandlivelyGatsbycomesintooureyes.He’samanwithsomanyconspicuousmerits,likeinnocent,resourcefulandgenerousaswell.ChapteronefocusesonthetwomostremarkablemeritsinGatsby’scharacter,namelyduteousanddetermined.

Formostpeople,thefirstimpressionwhichGatsbyleavesonusisaperfectloverwithaduteousheart.Besideshisresolutionmadeintheteens,themajorcausestimulatesGatsbytocourtfameandwealthistowinDaisyback.Throughoutthestory,Gatsby’sloyaltypermeatesineverycornerofthepassage.Tonamejustafew,hesettlesinWestEggjustbecauseDaisy’svillaislocatedacrossthebay.Onbalconiesofthemansion,atthebankofthebaystandsstillGatsby.Healwaysstretchesouthisarmsinlonely,noiselessandendlessnightasifDaisyiswithinhistouch.AfterMyrtle’saccident,GatsbywaitsoutsideDaisy’shousetillthemorningonlytomakesurewhetherTomwillhurtherornot.TheonlythingthathereallycaresaboutisDaisy’ssafety.What’smore,aconversationbetweenCarrawayandWolfsheimalsorevealshisloyalty.ItislearntfromWolfsheim’swordsthatGatsbyisverycarefulaboutwoman.HeneverpaysmuchattentiontootherwomensinceDaisyrootsinhismindandheart.AsfarasGatsbyisconcerned,DaisyhasbecomeadispensablepartofJayGatsby.WhataduteousmanGatsbyis!
