IwassurprisedbyhowdifferentKorea’spublichighschoolsarefromAmerica’s.Koreanhighschoolscanbeallgirlsallboysorcoed(男女同校的)unlikeourstandardcoedhighschools.Therearethreegrades:

“go1(10th)”,“go2(11th)”and“go3(12th)”.“Go”isthefirstsyllableoftheword“godeunghakkyo”,which,simplytranslated,is“highschool”.

InAmerica,unlessyouwanttogotoaprivateschool,youdon’thavetotakeanentranceexam.InKorea,however,studentsmusttakeatesttogetinbecauseofthemanychoicesofschools.

AnotherdifferenceIcouldn’thelpbutnoticewasthestudents’appearance.Withveryfewexceptions,allwearuniforms.Anametag(标牌)withthestudent’sname,gradeandhomeroomnumbermustalsobeworn.Girl’sskirtscan’tbeabovetheupperpartoftheknee,anditisforbiddentodye(染)yourhairorwearaccessories(装饰品)exceptsmallearrings.Therearestrictregulationsforappearancetoachieveneatness,anditseemstheonlyfreedomstudentshaveiswiththeirchoicesofhairstyle,socksandshoes.
