Toobserveactivitybeneaththeglacier,Dr.Holland’steamdrilledahole—about30centimeterswideand600metersdeep—fromthesurfacetothebottomandthenplacedequipmentthatmeasureswatertemperatureandoceanturbulence,orthemixingoffreshwaterfromtheglacierandsaltyoceanwater.Collectingthedatatookabout96hoursinsubzeroweather.WarmwatersbeneaththeThwaitesareactivelymeltingit,theteamfound.
