AgusJunaedi,theformermanagerofJatibarangLandfill,cameupwiththeideafortherestaurantin2014whenSemarang’smayorwantedhimtoreducetheamountofplasticwasteinthelandfill.40%ofthe800tonsofwastethatisaddedtothesitedailyisplastic.

Thepriceofplasticwasverylowatthattimeand,asJunaedisaid,“Naturally,noonewantedtocollectplasticwaste.Sowhydon’twegetthepoortopayfortheirmealwithplasticwaste?

Wehopepeoplechangetheirmindandseewasteasausefulthing.”

Additionally,afterafirein2014destroyednearly10acresofland,Junaedirealizedthatthemethanegas(甲烷)inthelandfillcouldbeusedinlife.ItisnowavailabletousefreeofchargeforpeoplearoundJatibarang,aswellasintheMethaneGasCanteen.
