AftertheRomanEmpire’sconquestofBritaininthefirstcentury.,thepresenceofadministrators,merchants,andtroopsonBritishsoil,alongwiththenaturalflowofideasandgoodsfromtherestoftheempire,hadanenormousinfluenceonlifeintheBritishIsles.Culturalinfluenceswereofthreetypes:

Inthemostextremeinstances,nativesliterallyboughtthewholepackageofRomanculture.TheFishbournevilla,builtinthethirdquarterofthefirstcentury.,probablyforthenativeclientkingCogidubnus,amplyillustrateshisRomanpretensions.ItwasconstructedinthelatestItalianstylewithimportedmarblesandstylishmosaics.ItwaslavishlyfurnishedwithimportedsculpturesandotherClassicalobjects.AvisitorfromRomewouldhaverecognizeditsownerasaparticipantinthecontemporarycultureoftheempire,notatallprovincialintaste.Evenifthosefromthetraditionalfamilieslookeddownonhim,theywouldhavebeenunabletodismisshimasuncultured.Althoughexceptional,thisdemonstrateshownewculturalsymbolsboundprovincialstotheidentityoftheRomanworld.
Suchexamplesestablishedastandardtobecopied.Oneresultwasaninfluxofcraftworker,particularlythoseskilledinartisticmedialikestone-carvingwhichhadnotexistedbeforetheconquest.CivilianworkerscamemostlyfromGaulandGermany.ThemagnificenttemplebuiltbesidethesacredspringatBathwasconstructedonlyabouttwentyyearsaftertheconquest.ItsdetailshowsthatitwascarvedbyartistsfromnortheastGaul.IntheabsenceofatraditionofClassicalstone-carvingandbuilding,thedesiretodevelopRomanamenitieswouldhavebeendifficulttofulfill.AdministratorsthususedtheirpersonalcontactstoputtheBritonsintouchwitharchitectsandmasons.AsmanyoftheofficialsinBritainhadstronglinkswithGaul,itisnotsurprisingthatearlyRomanBritainowesmuchtocraftworkersfromthatarea.Localworkshopsdiddevelopandstylisticallysimilargroupsofsculptureshowhowskillsinthisnewmediumbecamewiderspread.Likewiseskillsintheuseofmosaic,wallpainting,ceramicdecoration,andmetal-workingdevelopedthroughouttheprovincewiththeeventualemergenceofcharacteristicallyRomano-Britishstyles.
