  now,Ivegivenalotofspeechesabouteducation.AndIvetalkedaboutresponsibilityalot.

  Ivetalkedaboutteachersresponsibilityforinspiringstudentsandpushingyoutolearn.

  Ivetalkedaboutyourparentsresponsibilityformakingsureyoustayontrack,andyougetyourhomeworkdone,anddontspendeverywakinghourinfrontoftheTVorwiththexbox.

  Ivetalkedalotaboutyourgovernmentsresponsibilityforsettinghighstandards,andsupportingteachersandprincipals,andturningaroundschoolsthatarentworking,wherestudentsarentgettingtheopportunitiesthattheydeserve.

  butattheendoftheday,wecanhavethemostdedicatedteachers,themostsupportiveparents,thebestschoolsintheworld--andnoneofitwillmakeadifference,noneofitwillmatterunlessallofyoufulfillyourresponsibilities,unlessyoushowuptothoseschools,unlessyoupay

  attentiontothoseteachers,unlessyoulistentoyourparentsandgrandparentsandotheradultsandputinthehardworkittakesto

  succeed.ThatswhatIwanttofocusontoday:

theresponsibilityeachofyouhasforyoureducation.

  Iwanttostartwiththeresponsibilityyouhavetoyourself.everysingleoneofyouhassomethingthatyouregoodat.everysingleoneofyouhassomethingtooffer.Andyouhavearesponsibilitytoyourselftodiscoverwhatthatis.Thatstheopportunityaneducationcanprovide.maybeyoucouldbeagreatwriter--maybeevengoodenoughtowriteabookorarticlesinanewspaper--butyoumightnotknowituntilyouwritethatenglishpaper--thatenglishclasspaperthatsassignedtoyou.maybeyoucouldbeaninnovatororaninventor--maybeevengoodenoughtocomeupwiththenextIphoneorthenewmedicineorvaccine--butyoumightnotknowituntilyoudoyourprojectforyourscienceclass.maybeyoucouldbeamayororasenatororasupremecourtjustice--butyoumightnotknowthatuntilyoujoinstudentgovernmentorthedebateteam.

  Andnomatterwhatyouwanttodowithyourlife,Iguaranteethatyoullneedaneducationtodoit.Youwanttobeadoctor,orateacher,orapoliceofficer?

Youwanttobeanurseoranarchitect,alawyeroramemberofourmilitary?

Youregoingtoneedagoodeducationfor

  everysingleoneofthosecareers.Youcannotdropoutofschoolandjustdropintoagoodjob.Youvegottotrainforitandworkforitandlearnforit.

  Andthisisntjustimportantforyourownlifeandyourownfuture.whatyoumakeofyoureducationwilldecidenothinglessthanthefutureofthiscountry.ThefutureofAmericadependsonyou.whatyourelearninginschooltodaywilldeterminewhetherweasanationcanmeetourgreatestchallengesinthefuture.

  Youllneedtheknowledgeandproblem-solvingskillsyoulearninscienceandmathtocurediseaseslikecancerandAIDs,andtodevelopnewenergytechnologiesandprotectourenvironment.Youllneedtheinsightsandcritical-thinkingskillsyougaininhistoryandsocialstudiestofightpovertyandhomelessness,crimeanddiscrimination,andmakeournationmorefairandmorefree.Youllneedthecreativityand

  ingenuityyoudevelopinallyourclassestobuildnewcompaniesthatwillcreatenewjobsandboostoureconomy.

  Igetit.Iknowwhatitslike.myfatherleftmyfamilywhenIwastwoyearsold,andIwasraisedbyasinglemomwhohadtoworkandwhostruggledattimestopaythebillsandwasntalwaysabletogiveusthethingsthatotherkidshad.ThereweretimeswhenImissedhavinga

  fatherinmylife.ThereweretimeswhenIwaslonelyandIfeltlikeIdidntfitin.

  soIwasntalwaysasfocusedasIshouldhavebeenonschool,andIdidsomethingsImnotproudof,andIgotinmoretroublethanIshouldhave.Andmylifecouldhaveeasilytakenaturnfortheworse.

  butIwas--Iwaslucky.Igotalotofsecondchances,andIhadtheopportunitytogotocollegeandlawschoolandfollowmydreams.mywife,ourFirstLadymichelleobama,shehasasimilarstory.neitherofherparentshadgonetocollege,andtheydidnthavealotofmoney.buttheyworkedhard,andsheworkedhard,sothatshecouldgotothebestschoolsinthiscountry.

  someofyoumightnothavethoseadvantages.maybeyoudonthaveadultsinyourlifewhogiveyouthesupportthatyouneed.maybe

  someoneinyourfamilyhaslosttheirjobandtheresnotenoughmoneytogoaround.maybeyouliveinaneighborhoodwhereyoudontfeelsafe,orhavefriendswhoarepressuringyoutodothingsyouknowarentright.

  butattheendoftheday,thecircumstancesofyourlife--whatyoulooklike,whereyoucomefrom,howmuchmoneyyouhave,whatyouvegotgoingonathome--noneofthatisanexcuseforneglectingyourhomeworkorhavingabadattitudeinschool.Thatsnoexcusefor

  talkingbacktoyourteacher,orcuttingclass,ordroppingoutofschool.Thereisnoexcusefornottrying.

  whereyouarerightnowdoesnthavetodeterminewhereyoullendup.nooneswrittenyourdestinyforyou,becausehereinAmerica,youwriteyourowndestiny.Youmakeyourownfuture.

  Thatswhatyoungpeoplelikeyouaredoingeveryday,allacrossAmerica.

Fourandahalfyearslater,asyougraduate,thelandscapehaschanged.wehaveremovedourtroopsfromIraq.wearewindingdownourwarinAfghanistan.Al-Qaida’sleadershipontheborderregionbetweenpakistanandAfghanistanhasbeendecimated,andosamabinLadenisnomore。

)Andthroughitall,we’verefocusedourinvestmentsinwhathasalwaysbeenakeysourceofAmericanstrength:

agrowingeconomythatcanprovideopportunityforeverybodywho’swillingtoworkhardandtakeresponsibilityhereathome。

  20XX年,我首次在西点发表演讲时,我们仍有10万多名士兵驻扎在伊拉克,也正准备增兵阿富汗。

Americacontinuestoattractstrivingimmigrants.Thevaluesofourfoundinginspireleadersinparliamentsandnewmovementsinpublicsquaresaroundtheglobe.Andwhenatyphoonhitsthephilippines,orschoolgirlsarekidnappedinnigeria,ormaskedmenoccupyabuildinginukraine,itisAmericathattheworldlookstoforhelp.(Applause。

)sotheunitedstatesisandremainstheoneindispensablenation.Thathasbeentrueforthecenturypast,anditwillbetrueforthecenturytocome。

buttheworldischangingwithacceleratingspeed.Thispresentsopportunity,butalsonewdangers.weknowalltoowell,after9/11,justhowtechnologyandglobalizationhasput

  poweroncereservedforstatesinthehandsofindividuals,raisingthecapacityofterroriststodoharm。
