Iknowthatformanyofyou,todayisthefirstdayofschool.Andforthoseofyouinkindergarten,orstartingmiddleorhighschool,it'syourfirstdayinanewschool,soit'sunderstandableifyou'realittlenervous.Iimaginetherearesomeseniorsouttherewhoarefeelingprettygoodrightnow,withjustonemoreyearstogo.Andnomatterwhatgradeyou'rein,someofyouareprobablywishingitwerestillsummer,andyoucould'vestayedinbedjustalittlebitlongerthismorning.

Iknowthatfeel.WhenIwasyoung,myfamilylivedoverseas.IlivedinIndonesiaforafewyears,andmymother,shedidn'thavethemoneytosendmewherealltheAmericankidswenttoschool,whichshethoughtitwasimportantformetokeepupwithAmericaneducation.Soshedecidedtoteachmeextralessonsherself,MondaythroughFriday–butbecauseshehadtogotowork,theonlytimeshecoulddoitwasat4:

30inthemorning.  

NowasyoumightimagineIwasn'ttoohappyaboutgettingupthatearly.Alotoftimes,I'dfallasleeprightthereatthekitchentable.ButwheneverI'dcomplain,mymotherwouldjustgivemeoneofthoselooksandshe’dsay,"Thisisnopicnicformeeither,buster."

SoIknowthatsomeofyouarestilladjustingtobeingbackatschool.ButI'mheretodaybecauseIhavesomethingimportanttodiscusswithyou.I'mherebecauseIwanttotalkwithyouaboutyoureducationandwhat'sexpectedofallofyouinthisnewschoolyear.

NowI'vegivenalotofspeechesabouteducation.AndI'vetalkedaboutresponsibilityalot.I'vetalkedaboutteachers'responsibilityforinspiringstudents,andpushingyoutolearn.I'vetalkedaboutyourparents'responsibilityformakingsureyoustayontrack,andgetyourhomeworkdone,anddon'tspendeverywakinghourinfrontoftheTVorwiththatXbox.

I'vetalkedalotaboutyourgovernment'sresponsibilityforsettinghighstandards,andsupportingteachersandprincipals,andturningaroundschoolsthatarenotworkingwherestudentsaren'tgettingtheopportunitiestheydeserve.

Butattheendoftheday,wecanhavethemostdedicatedteachers,themostsupportiveparents,thebestschoolsintheworld-andnoneofitwillmakeadifference,noneofitwillmatterunlessallofyoufulfillyourresponsibilities.Unlessyoushowuptothoseschools;unlessyoupayattentiontothoseteachers;unlessyoulistentoyourparentsandgrandparentsandotheradults;andputinthehardworkittakestosucceed.

Andthat'swhatIwanttofocusontoday:

theresponsibilityeachofyouhasforyoureducation.Iwanttostartwiththeresponsibilityyouhavetoyourself.

Everysingleoneofyouhassomethingthatyou'regoodat.Everysingleoneofyouhassomethingtooffer.Andyouhavearesponsibilitytoyourselftodiscoverwhatthatis.That'stheopportunityaneducationcanprovide.

Maybeyoucouldbeagreatwriter-maybeevengoodenoughtowriteabookorarticlesinanewspaper-butyoumightnotknowituntilyouwritethatEnglishclasspaperthatassignedtoyou.Maybeyoucouldbeaninnovatororaninventor-maybeevengoodenoughtocomeupwiththenexti-Phoneoranewmedicineorvaccine-butyoumightnotknowituntilyoudoyourprojectforyourscienceclass.MaybeyoucouldbeamayororaSenatororaSupremeCourtJustice,butyoumightnotknowthatuntilyoujoinstudentgovernmentorthedebateteam.

Andnomatterwhatyouwanttodowithyourlife-Iguaranteethatyou'llneedaneducationtodoit.Youwanttobeadoctor,orateacher,orapoliceofficer?

Youwanttobeanurseoranarchitect,alawyeroramemberofourmilitary?

You'regoingtoneedagoodeducationforeverysingleoneofthosecareers.Youcan'tdropoutofschoolandjustdropintoagoodjob.You'vegottotrainforit,andworkforitandlearnforit.

Andthisisn'tjustimportantforyourownlifeandyourownfuture.Whatyoumakeofyoureducationwilldecidenothinglessthanthefutureofthiscountry.Whatyou'relearninginschooltodaywilldeterminewhetherweasanationcanmeetourgreatestchallengesinthefuture.

You'llneedtheknowledgeandproblem-solvingskillsyoulearninscienceandmathtocurediseaseslikecancerandAIDS,andtodevelopnewenergytechnologiesandprotectourenvironment.You'llneedtheinsightsandcriticalthinkingskillsyougaininhistoryandsocialstudiestofightpovertyandhomelessness,crimeanddiscrimination,andmakeournationmorefairsandmorefree.You'llneedthecreativityandingenuityyoudevelopinallyourclassestobuildnewcompaniesthatwillcreatenewjobsandboostoureconomy.

Weneedeverysingleoneofyoutodevelopyourtalents,skillsandintellectsoyoucanhelpsolveourmostdifficultproblems.Ifyoudon'tdothat-ifyouquitonschool-you'renotjustquittingonyourself,you'requittingonyourcountry.

NowIknowit'snotalwayseasytodowellinschool.Iknowalotofyouhavechallengesinyourlivesrightnowthatcanmakeithardtofocusonyourschoolwork.

Igetit.Iknowwhatthat'slike.MyfatherleftmyfamilywhenIwastwoyearsold,andIwasraisedbyasinglemotherwhostruggledattimestopaythebillsandwasn'talwaysabletogiveusthingstheotherkidshad.ThereweretimeswhenImissedhavingafatherinmylife.ThereweretimeswhenIwaslonelyandfeltlikeIdidn'tfitin.

SoIwasn'talwaysasfocusedasIshouldhavebeen.IdidsomethingsI'mnotproudof,andgotinmoretroublethanIshouldhave.Andmylifecouldhaveeasilytakenaturnfortheworse.

ButIwasfortunate.Igotalotofsecondchancesandhadtheopportunitytogotocollege,andlawschool,andfollowmydreams.Mywife,ourFirstLadyMichelleObama,hasasimilarstory.Neitherofherparentshadgonetocollege,andtheydidn'thavemuch.Buttheyworkedhard,andsheworkedhard,sothatshecouldgotothebestschoolsinthiscountry.

Someofyoumightnothavethoseadvantages.Maybeyoudon'thaveadultsinyourlifewhogiveyouthesupportthatyouneed.Maybesomeoneinyourfamilyhaslosttheirjob,andthere'snotenoughmoneytogoaround.Maybeyouliveinaneighborhoodwhereyoudon'tfeelsafe,orhavefriendswhoarepressuringyoutodothingsyouknowaren'tright.

Butattheendoftheday,thecircumstancesofyourlife-whatyoulooklike,whereyoucomefrom,howmuchmoneyyouhave,whatyou'vegotgoingonathome-that'snoexcuseforneglectingyourhomeworkorhavingabadattitude.That'snoexcusefortalkingbacktoyourteacher,orcuttingclass,ordroppingoutofschool.That'snoexcusefornottrying.

Whereyouarerightnowdoesn'thavetodeterminewhereyou'llendup.Noone'swrittenyourdestinyforyou.HereinAmerica,youwriteyourowndestiny.Youmakeyourownfuture.

That'swhatyoungpeoplelikeyouaredoingeveryday,allacrossAmerica.

YoungpeoplelikeJazminPerez,fromRoma,Texas.Jazmindidn'tspeakEnglishwhenshefirststartedschool.Hardlyanyoneinherhometownwenttocollege,andneitherofherparentshadgoneeither.Butsheworkedhard,earnedgoodgrades,gotascholarshiptoBrownUniversity,andisnowingraduateschool,studyingpublichealth,onherwaytobeingDr.JazminPerez.

I'mthinkingaboutAndoniSchultz,fromLosAltos,California,who'sfoughtbraincancersincehewasthree.He'senduredallsortsoftreatmentsandsurgeries,oneofwhichaffectedhismemory,soittookhimmuchlonger-hundredsofextrahours-todohisschoolwork.Butheneverfellbehind,andhe'sheadedtocollegethisfall.

Andthenthere'sShantellSteve,frommyhometownofChicago,Illinois.Evenwhenbouncingfromfosterhometofosterhomeinthetoughestneighborhoods,shemanagedtogetajobatalocalhealthcenter;startaprogramtokeepyoungpeopleoutofgangs;andshe'sontracktograduatehighschoolwithhonorsandgoontocollege.

Jazmin,AndoniandShantellaren'tanydifferentfromanyofyou.Theyfacedchallengesintheirlivesjustlikeyoudo.Buttheyrefusedtogiveup.Theychosetotakeresponsibilityfortheireducationandsetgoalsforthemselves.AndIexpectallofyoutodothesame.

That'swhytoday,I'mcallingoneachofyoutosetyourowngoalsforyoureducation-andtodoeverythingyoucantomeetthem.Yourgoalcanbesomethingassimpleasdoingallyourhomework,payingattentioninclass,orspendingtimeeachdayreadingabook.Maybeyou'lldecidetogetinvolvedinanextracurricularactivity,orvolunteerinyourcommunity.Maybeyou'lldecidetostandupforkidswhoarebeingteasedorbulliedbecauseofwhotheyareorhowtheylook,becauseyoubelieve,likeIdo,thatallkidsdeserveasafeenvironmenttostudyandlearn.Maybeyou'lldecidetotakebettercareofyourselfsoyoucanbemorereadytolearn.Andalongthoselines,Ihopeyou'llallwashyourhandsalot,andstayhomefromschoolwhenyoudon'tfeelwell,sowecankeeppeoplefromgettingthefluthisfallandwinter.

Whateveryouresolvetodo,Iwantyoutocommittoit.Iwantyoutoreallyworkatit.

Iknowthatsometimes,yougetthesensefromTVthatyoucanberichandsuccessfulwithoutanyhardwork--thatyourtickettosuccessisthroughrappingorbasketballorbeingarealityTVstar,whenchancesare,you'renotgoingtobeanyofthosethings.

Butthetruthis,beingsuccessfulishard.Youwon'tloveeverysubjectyoustudy.Youwon'tclickwitheveryteacher.Noteveryhomeworkassignmentwillseemcompletelyrelevanttoyourliferightthisminute.Andyouwon'tnecessarilysucceedateverythingthefirsttimeyoutry.
