PolarbearshavealwaysbeenacommonsightonseaicenearKaktovik,butresidentsstartednoticingachangeinthemid-1990s.Becauseofthedifficultsituation,morebearsstartedtostayonland,andresearchersbegantakingnoteofmorefemalebearsmakingdens(兽穴)inthesnowonlandinsteadofontheicetoraisetheirbabies.

“U.S.FishandWildlifeServicebiologistsbeganhearingreportsoftheincreasingnumbersofpolarbearsintheareaintheearly2000s,”Reedsaid.Asmoreattentionwasgiventotheplightofpolarbears,moretouristsstatedheadingtoKaktovik.

Mosttouristsvisitinthefall,whenbearsareforcedtowardlandbecauseseaiceisthefarthestawayfromtheshore.BruceInglangasak,alocalhunterwhoofferswildlife-viewingtours,saidhehasbeenofferingpolarbeartourssince2003or2004.MostofhisclientsarefromEuropeandtheUSA.“Manytouristsstayseveraldaysinthevillage,whichhastwosmallhotels,”Brucesaid.

Otherstudieshavepointedoutalinkbetweenexcessive(过度的)orpoorsleepandobesity(肥胖),whichleadstoincreasedstrokerisk.Thoserisks,includinghighbloodpressure,werefactoredintoDr.Zhang'steam'sdata.

Dr.Zhang'sstudycollecteddatafrom31,750peoplelivinginChinawithamedianageof62.Aftersixyearsofself-reportedfollow-upsandphysicalexaminations,1,500oftheparticipantswerefoundtohavesufferedstrokesduringthatensuingperiodoftime.

Dr.Zhangnotedthatthestudyislimited,sinceitwasconductedmainlyonelderlypatients.Theadvicewithinitmayapplyonlytotheelderly.
