ABriefIntroductiontoHuangshan
YellowMountain,whichisalsocalledHuangshan,isoneofthemostpopularattractionsinChina.It’slocatedinthesouthoftheAnhuiprovince.Themainscenicareacovers154squarekilometers.ItwaslistedbytheUNESCOasoneoftheworld’sculturalandnaturalheritagesitesin1990.
InancienttimesHuangshanwasnamedYiMountain.YiinoldChinesemeans“black”.Themountainisformedbygranitewhichlooksblackandgrey,hencethename.Butintheyearof746intheTangDynasty,itwasrenamedHuangshaninmemoryofEmperorHuang(thefirstemperorinChina’shistory)who,accordingtothelegend,madeimmortalpillsatthetopofHuangshanandeventuallyascendedtoheaven.Thereare72mainpeaks,amongwhichtheLotusFlowerPeakisthehighestpeakwithanelevationof1864meterswhiletheBrightSummitandtheCelestialCapitalaretheothermajorones.
Mt.Huangshanisaworldfullofmagic.Over400yearsago,XuXiake,afamoustravelersaid“HavingseenthefivemajormountainsinChina,onedoesnotwanttoseeanyothermountains;havingseentheall-inclusiveMountainHuangshan,onedoesnotwishtoseeanyofthefivemajormountains”.It’swell-knownforitsfourwonders.Theyare:

Pinetreescanbeseeneverywhereatthemountain.Theygrowinthecracksofrocks,asthesayinggoes“Norockisnotcoveredbypine,nopineisnotgrotesque.”ThebeautyofHuangshan’spinesisindeedbeyonddescription.Theirrootsstrikedeeplyintothedepthoftherockandattachthemselvestotherocksinstarknakedness.TheGuest-greetingpine,thePhoenixpineandtheExploring-seapineandsomanyothersstandinimagesthatalwaysmakethetouristsfullofimagination.Thesepinetreesaremostlyfoundat800-1750metersabovesealevel.Theyhavegnarlingbranchesanddifferentposture,andeachposturelooksunbelievablyenchanting.TheGuest-greetingpine,whichisover1,300yearsold,isasymbolofHuangshanandanemblemofthehospitalityoftheChinesenation.
