HeEnfu,Zhou's68-year-oldgrandmother,saidtheyworkinthecitytoearnmoremoney,whereasiftheyworkedonfarmlandinthemountainousvillagetheywouldhardlymakeanymoney.
"Thereareninepeopleinmyfamily,andweonlyhad4.5mu(0.3hectares)offarmland,fromwhichwecouldjustfeedourselvesandseldomearnanymoney,"shesaid.
"Themountainousregionisnotsuitableforfactoriesandtherearenotsomanyjobopportunitieshere,"saidQiuZhouhe,deputyheadofFushan."Asaresult,mostyoungpeoplegotootherplacestoseekbetterjobs."
Hesaidthereare31,000peopleinthetown,andmorethan7,000ofthemhavebecomemigrantworkers.
Unbearablefeeling
AccordingtotheAll-ChinaWomen'sFederation,roughly58millionchildrenwereleftbehindinruralareasbymigrant-workerparentsin2010nationwide.Thatworksouttoaboutoneineveryfourchildreninruralregions.
About79.7percentofleft-behindchildrenarecaredforbytheirgrandparents,and13percentwerelefttotheirrelativesorfriends,whiletheremaining7.3percentlivebythemselves,thefederationsaid.
Zhou'sparentswereforcedtoleavetheirdaughtersinthevillagebecausetheycouldnotaffordthechildren'sexpensesintheurbanregion,whereeducationfees,foodandhousingaremoreexpensive,saidHe,thegirls'grandmother.
"Byworkingdayandnightwithoutanyweekends,herparentscanearn4,000to5,000yuan($629to$786)amonth,"Hesaid.
Whentheytalkonthephone,Zhousaidthemaintopicofconversationwithherparentsisifsheisbehavingandmakingprogressinherstudies.
"Weseldomhaveanytopicsotherthanthetworoutinequestions,"theteenagersaid.
Zhou'sparentsdeclinedtobeinterviewed,sayingonlytheyfeelsadforfailingtostaywiththeirchildren.
XiangYongjian,33,lefthisdaughterinthevillagewhenshewasbornsevenyearsago.
Althoughhesaidhemissedherverymuch,heexplainedthatheandhiswifecouldnottakethegirlwiththemtoFoshan,Guangdongprovince,wheretheyworkedfrom2003to2011.
"BothmywifeandIworkedaroundtheclockwithoutholidayinthefactory,sowehadnotimetotakecareofababy,"hesaid."Ourincomesaddeduptonomorethan2,500yuanamonth,notenoughtohireababysitter."
Thecouplemissedtheirdaughtersomuchthattheycriedwhentheyheardhervoiceonthephone,hesaid.
"Thefeelingbecameunbearablewhenwesawsomeotherparentsplayingwiththeirchildreninthepark,"headded.
Fornearlysevenyears,Xiangandhiswifehadtobeapartfromtheirdaughtertoearnmoremoney.
"Nomoney,nohappiness,"hesaid."Maybeit'sshort-termpaintobeseparatedfrommybaby,butwehavenootherchoice.Noneofuswanttoliveinpoverty."
Unhealedscars
Xiang'swifegavebirthtoaboylastyear,andtheydecidedtoreturnhome.
ThesalaryofXiangandhiswifereached7,000yuanamonthbeforetheyleftthefactoryinFoshan.However,hesaidhewouldrathergiveupthejobinexchangeforbeingwithhischildren.
"Ihavealreadygivenmydaughteracompletechildhoodawayfromherparents,andIdonotwanttodothattomyson,"hesaid.
WiththemoneyheandhiswifeearnedinFoshan,Xiangmanagedtobuildathree-storyvillainhishometown,buyacarvaluedat70,000yuanandsetuparestaurantnearaprimaryschoolinthecounty.
Theeconomicrewardhasmadehimquitehappy,buthis7-year-olddaughterhasbecome"toodisobedient",whichmadehimworried.
