She’s66—farfromretirementageinjazz,andontheextremeforwardedgeoftheNEAJazzMasterspeople.Soshewasawareofherrelativeyouthinthefield.Shealsorecognizedthattherehaven’tbeenmanywomenintheranksofNEAJazzMasters:

fewerthan20,outof145.Thatidealedhertoreflectonherpredecessors(前任):

legendarysingerslikeBettyCarter,whowasseatedbackin1992,andAbbeyLincoln,whoreceivedthenodin2003.

BridgewatersoughtinspirationandadvicefrombothCarterandLincoln,assherecallsinthisperiodofJazzNight,whichfeaturesmusicrecordedduringtheseasonopenerforJazzatLincolnCenter.OntheprogramcalledSongsofFreedom,organizedbydrummerUlyssesOwens,Jr.,BridgewatersangmaterialassociatedwithLincolnaswellasNinaSimone:

anextremelyangrysongofthecivilrightsmovement,like“MississippiGoddam”.

Aseparateconcert,“SongsWeLove”,foundBridgewatersinginglesspoliticallycharged(butstillexciting)materiallike“StJamesInfirmary”,whichappearsonhermostrecentalbum.Inwordsaswellasmusic,thisperiodrevealshowseriouslyBridgewatertakesthatresponsibility,seeingashowitconnectstoherownexperienceinjazz.Butmaybe“seriously”isn’ttherightwordwhenitcomestoDeeDee,whoseeffervescence(欢腾)shinesthrougheveninareflectivemood.

Noneofthestudyvolunteershadserioussideeffects.Thegroupsthatgotpatcheshadmildskinreactionsthatwerenotseenintheregularneedlegroup,whilethevolunteersintheregularneedlegroupweremorelikelytoexperiencepain.Overall,70percentofthevolunteerswhogotvaccinepatchessaidthey’dratherusethemagainthangetatraditionalflushot.Thestudyauthorsdeclareditasuccessonallfronts.

Thebiggestbeneficiariescouldbepeopleinlowandmiddle-incomecountries,wherefluvaccinesarehardtocomeby.Reducingpainisnice,butotherbenefits—thepatchcostsless,iseasiertotransport,doesn’trequirerefrigeration,canbeself-administeredanddoesn’tcausewasteofneedles—areevenbetter.
