　　iwasbornprematurebyabout10weeks,whichresultedinmyblindness,some64yearsago.theconditionisknownasretrolentalfibroplasia,anditsnowveryrareinthedevelopedworld.littledidiknow,lyingcurledupinmyprimbabyhumidicribin1948thatidbeenbornattherightplaceandtherighttime,thatiwasinacountrywhereicouldparticipateinthetechnologicalrevolution.

　　thereare37milliontotallyblindpeopleonourplanet,butthoseofuswhovesharedinthetechnologicalchangesmainlycomefromnorthamerica,europe,japanandotherdevelopedpartsoftheworld.computershavechangedthelivesofusallinthisroomandaroundtheworld,butithinktheyvechangedthelivesofwerethananyothergroup.andsoiwanttotellyouabouttheinteractionbetweencomputer-basedadaptivetechnologyandthemanyvolunteerswhohelpedmeovertheyearstobecomethepersoniamtoday.itsaninteractionbetweenvolunteers,passionateinventorsandtechnology,anditsastorythatmanyotheruldtell.butletmetellyouabitaboutittoday.

　　itwasinventedbyrussellsmith,apassionateinventorinnewzealandwhowastryingtohelpblindpeople.sadly,hediedinalightplanecrashin**,buthismemorylivesoninmyheart.itmeant,forthefirsttime,icouldreadbackwhatihadtypedintoit.ithadaspeechsynthesizer.idwrittenmyfirstcoauthoredlaborlawbookonatypewriterin1979purelyfrommemory.thisnowallowedmetoreadbackwhatidwrittenandtoenterthecomputerworld,evenwithits84kofmemory.

　　in1974,thegreatraykurzweil,theamericaninventor,workedonbuildingamachinethatwouldscanbooksandreadthemoutinsyntheticspeech.opticalcharacterrecognitionunitsthenonlyoperatedusuallyononefont,butbyusingcharge-coupleddeviceflatbedscannersandspeechsynthesizers,hedevelopedamachinethatcouldreadanyfont.andhismachine,whichwasasbigasawashingmachine,waslaunchedonthe13thofjanuary,1976.isawmyfirstcommerciallyavailablekurzweilinmarch1989,anditblewmeaway,andinseptember1989,themonththatmyassociateprofessorshipatmonashuniversitywasannounced,thelawschoolgotone,andicoulduseit.forthefirsttime,icouldreadwhatiwantedtoreadbyputtingabookonthescanner.ididnthavetobenicetopeople!

　　therearemanypeoplewhohavehelpedmeinmylife,andmanythatihaventmet.oneisanotheramericaninventortedhenter.tedwasamotorcycleracer,butin1978hehadacaraccidentandlosthissight,whichisdevastatingifyouretryingtoridemotorbikes.hethenturnedtobeingawaterskierandwasachampiondisabledwaterskier.butin1989,heteamedupwithbilljoycetodevelopaprogramthatwouldreadoutwhatwasonthecomputerscreenfromthenetorfromwhatwasonthecomputer.itscalledjaws,jobaccesswithspeech,anditsoundslikethis.
