2Timedomainandlinearanalysismodes

Whenyouclickoncomponentorlinerun,AMESimbehavesdifferentlyifTimedomainmodeorLinearanalysismodeiscurrentlyselected.IfLinearanalysismodeisselectedagroupofspecialiconsaredisplayed.InTimedomainmodeyoucanplotgraphs.ThisactivityinvolvesAMESimreadingthereadingtheresultsfilesfromeitherastandardrunorabatchrun.InLinearanalysismodeyoucan:

●Setthecharacteristicsforlinearanalysestobedoneduringnextrun.

●Lookateigenvalues.

●DoBode,NyquistandNicholsplots.

●Examinemodalshapes.

●Doarootlocusplot.

ThisinvolvesAMESimreading.jac(Jacobian)files.Inbothmodesrunparameterscanbesetandrunsinitiated.

3Runningasimulation

Torunasimulation:

1.Ifnecessary,changetheSavestatusandLockedstatusofvariables.

2.

Ifnecessary,changethelinearanalysisstatusofvariables.

3.Settherunparameterstodefinethecharacteristicsoftherun.TodothisclickontheRunparametersbuttontopuoducetheRunParametersdialogbox.

4.

InitiatetherunbyclickingontheStartrunbutton.Whentherunstarts,aSimulationrundialogboxappears.

3.1SavestatusandSavenextstatusofvariables

IftheSavenextstatusofavariableistrue,duringthenextrun

itsvaluewillbeaddedtothe.resultsfile.TheSavenextstatusof

variablesdoesnotinanywayinfluencelinearanalysisresults.

TheSavenextstatusofvariablescanbechanged:

●Globallyforthecurrentlyseletedsub-system.

●Forallvariablesinasubmodel.

●Forindividualvariables.

Inthe.resultsfileavariableissavedornotaccordingtoitssavedstatuewhentherunwasinitiated.Thismaybedifferentfromitscurrentstatus.IfyouwanttochangethestatusofavariabletickthecorrespondingboxwithinTheSavenextcolumnbeforetherun.Thesavedvariableareinthe.resultsfileandyoucanplotthem.ThecolumnSavedshowsifavariablehasbeensavedornotandconsequentlyifitisplottable.

 

Globalchangeofsavenextstatus

1.Selectthepartofthesystemofinterestorselectthewholesystemusing

●Ctrl+Aor

●Edit→Selectall

2.CreatetherightbuttonmenuorusetheToolspulldownmenu.Ineithercaseselect.

●Saveallvariablesor

●Savenovariables.

Ifallyouwanttodoisaseriesoflinearanalyseswithabigsystem,itmaybeappropriatetodoarunwiththeSavenextstatusofallvariablesfalse.

 

SubmodelchangeofSavenextstatus

1.MakesureyouareinTimedomainmode.

2.ClickonacomponentorlineruntoproducetheVariablelistdialogbox.

3.ClickonSavealltoensurethatallvariablesinthatsubmodelwillbesavedduringnextrun.

4.ClickonSavenonetoensurethatnovariablesinthatsubmodelwillbesavedduringthenextrun.

 

IndividualvariablechangeofSavenextstatus

1.MakesureyouareinTimedomainmode

2.ClickonacomponentorlineruntoproducetheVariablelistdialogbox.

3.AlterthecheckboxstatusintheSavenextcolumn.Atickmeansthevariablewillbesavedduringthenextrun.

3.2Lockedstatusofstatevariables

Thefollowingvariables:

●Explicitstate

●Implicitstate

ButnotconstraintvariableshaveaLockedstatuswhichistrueorfalse.Thislockedstatusonlyinfluencestheresultsifthereisanysortofstabilizingrun.Ifoneofthesevariablesislocked,itsvalueisnotallowedtovaryduringastabilizingrun.Thelockedstatesfacilityisusefulforadvanceduserswhowishtoobtainapartialequilibriumfortheirsystem.TheLockedstatusofstatevariablescanbechanged:

●Globallyforthecurrentlyselectedsub-system.

●Forallstatevariablesinasubmodel.

●Forindividualstatevariables.

GlobalchangeofLockedstatus

1.Selectthepartofthesystemofinterestorselectthewholesystemusing

ChangeofLockedstatusforindividualstatevariables

1.MakesureyouareinTimedomainmode.

2.Right-clickonacomponentorlineruntoproducethepulldownmenu.

3.SelectLockstatestoproducetheLockedstatesstatusdialogbox.

4.AlterthestateofthecheckbuttonsintheLockedcolumntochangetheLockedstatusofindividualstatevariables.

 

3.3Settingrunparameters

IfyouclickontheRunparametersbutton,yougettheRunParameters

dialogbox.Thisisusedtochangecharacteristicsofnextrun.Youcanchangenumericalvaluesandenableordisablevariouscheckandradiobuttons.Atthetopofthedialogbox3tabsgiveyouaccesstogroupsofparametersandoptionsyoucanchange,Whenyouhavemadethechangesyouwant,clickontheOKbuttontosavethem.IfyouclickonCancel,yourchangeswillbeignored.Wenowlookattheparametersandoptionsavailableunderthethreetabs

WiththeGeneraltabselectedyouhaveaccesstovaluesandoptionswhich

applytoboththestandardintegratorandfixedstepintegratorsasintheexampleshowninFigure.TheValuecolumniseditable.

Tochangeavalue:

1.Double-clickonit.

2.Typethenewvalueintheeditedbox.

Themeaningofthefirsttwoitemsinthelistisobvious.Ashortnoteonthethirditemandonthevariousoptionbuttonsisappropriate.

Communicationinterval

Duringtherundataisaddedtotheresultsfile.Thecommunicationintervalspecifieshowoftenthisisdone.Thesmallerthecommunicationintervalis,thelargerthe.resultsfileis.MostAMESimuserslikeabout1000pointsintheirresultfiles.

Hencetheformula:

 

ThecommunicationintervalandthestepsizeusedbytheAMESimintegratorarecompletelyindependent.IfyouenabletheDiscontinuityprintoutbutton,extravaluesareaddedto.resultsfileatthediscontinuitypoints.

Tolerance

TheAMESimstandardintegratorperformsintegrationinaseriesofdiscretesteps.Ateachstepaniterativeprocessisemployedandthisprocessmustconverge.Thusaftereachintegrationstepaconvergencetestisemployed.Whentheiterationsdoconverge,anerrortestisemployedtodetermineiftheresultsareaccurateenough.Ifeitherofthesetestsfails,thestepmustberepeatedwithasmallerstepsize.ThesetwotestsusethetolerancevaluedefinedinSimulationvalueslist.Anumberofimportantstatementsmustbemade:

●Thereisnopreciseconnectionbetweenthetoleranceandactualmaximumerrorintheresults.Themostgeneralthingwecansayisthatthesmallerthetoleranceis,themoreaccuratearetheresults.

●Normallyyoushouldnotusevalueslessthan1.0e-10butoccasionaltolerancesdownto1.0e-14work.

●Normallyyoushouldnotusevaluesgreaterthan1.0e-3.

Ifyouaregoingtotrusttheresults,itisverygoodpracticetoperformaseriesofrunswithasequenceoftolerances.Lookforconsistencybetweentheresults.Thedefaultvalueforthetoleranceis1.0e-5.Normallyifyouperformfurtherrunswith1.0e-6,1.0e-7,1.0e-8,1.0e-9,youwillnotnoticeanysignificantdifference.Ifyoudo,believetheresultsproducedwiththesmallertolerance.

AnextremelyusefulsubmodelisSIMP1whichisassociatedwiththeiconshown.Theiconcontainsa‘!

’andthismeansusewithcaution.

ThiscautionisnecessarybecauseparameterssetinSIMP1takeprecedenceoverthevaluesintheRunParametersdialogbox.Theparameterofinterestishighlightedbelow.

Ifyoursketchcontainsthisicon,youdraganddropthisparameterintoaBatchControlParametersSetupdialogbox,youcanorganizeabatchrunwiththetolerancevarying.Theparametersbelowgiveabatchrunwithtolerances1.0e-5,1.0e-6,1.0e-7,1.0e-8and1.0e-9.

Runtype

herearetworadiobuttons:

●Singlerun.

●Batch.

Mustbeselectedone.IfBatchisselected,theBatchoptionsbuttonissensitive.Clickonthisifyouwanttospecifyasubsetofbatchrunstooccur.DefinewhichrunstosuppressintheBatchRunSelectiondialogbox.

 

 

Miscellaneous

Thesecheckbuttonscanbeenabledordisabledinanycombination.

Statistics

WiththeStatisticsbuttonenabled,whentheruniscomplete,abriefsummaryofwhathappenedintherunisdisplayedintheSimulationrundialogbox:

NotethattheaccuracyoftheCPUtimedependsontheplatformyouareusing.OnatleastoneplatformCPUtimesareextremelyinaccurate.

Monitortime

MonitortimeisenabledbydefaultandaprogressbarappearsatthebottomoftheSimulationrundialogbox.Onsomeplatformscreatingthisbarslowsthesimulationdownsignificantlyonsimpleruns.

●ExperimentwithyourlocalAMESimrunningwiththebuttonenabledand

disabled.Ifthereisasignificantdifferenceyoumayprefertokeepitdisabled.

●Ifyouwanttodobenchmarktests,itisagoodideatodisableit.

Useoldfinalvalues

IftheUseoldfinalvaluesbuttonisenabled,AMESimtriestoextractthefinalvaluesfromthe
