Fortoday’soldersinglewomen,mostproblemsarerelatedeithertotheireconomicsituationortheiremotionalwell-being.Iwouldbehard-pressedtosaywhichofthetwoisthemoreimportantinaffectingthequalityoflife.Clearly,povertyisdevastating.Yet,manywomen’smonetarilycomfortable,butemotionallylonelyexistenceconveysthat,money,byitself,isnotsufficient.

Bothtypesofdifficultiessteminlargepartfromalifetimeof,firstbeingtaughtandthenputtingintopractice,dependenceonmale.Overthepastdecadeorso,therehavebeencountlessreportsonthedisplacedhomemakers.Yeteventhosewomenwhohavesomeworkhistoriesarelikelytohaveirregularonesandmaynowfindthemselveswithinadequateeducationorskillstosuccessfullycompeteintoday’squicklychanging,high-tech,workworld.

Emotionally,thisdependencecausesdamage,too.Today’solderwomenwerenotsocializedinhowtohandleindependence,muchlessviewthatstateasapositiveordesirableoption.Theyweresocializedtoappreciatemanandtoviewotherwomenascompetitionrathercomrades.

Goodmorning.Thisweek,thethoughtsandprayersofmillionsofAmericansarewiththevictimsoftheVirginiaTechattacks.Weprayforthewounded.Andwesendourlovetothosewhoarehurting.

Thedayaftertheattack,LauraandIattendedamemorialserviceonthecampusinBlacksburg.Wemetwithfacultymemberswholoststudentsandcolleagues,andsharedhugswithgrievingmomsanddads-includingparentswhohadlosttheironlychild.Weofferedwhatwordsofcomfortwecould.WewantedeveryoneheretoknowthatthistragedysaddenedourentireNationandthattheAmericanpeoplestandwiththeminanhourofdarkness.

IhavedirectedsomeofficialstotraveltocommunitiesacrossourNation,tomeetwitheducators,metalhealthexperts,andstateandlocalofficials.IhaveaskedtheSecretaryofHealthandHumanServicestosummarizewhattheylearnandreportbacktomewithrecommendationsabouthowwecanhelptoavoidsuchtragedies.

ThisweekatVa.Tech,wesawaglimpseofhumanityatitsworst,andwealsosawthatatitsbest.Welearntofstudentswhoriskedtheirownsafetytoattendtowoundedclassmates.Weheardofateacherwhousedhisbodytobarricadeaclassroomdoorandgavehislifesohisstudentscouldescapethroughwindow.

AndtherewasaletterwrittenbyaVirginiaTechgraduateshortlyaftertheattack:

“today,thereisapaineverywhereinourcommunity,andourheartsaretroubled.YetIamcertainouruniversitywillpersevere.Evilcanneversucceed,notwhilethereare…menandwomenlikethepeopleofVa.Techwhoreacheverydayforsuccess.”
