Yet even those women who have some work histories are likely to have irregular ones and may now find themselves with inadequate education or skills to successfully compete in todays quickly changing, high-tech, work world. Emotionally, this dependence causes damage, too. Todays o

13、lder women were not socialized in how to handle independence, much less view that state as a positive or desirable option. They were socialized to appreciate man and to view other women as competition rather comrades. In talking with married women in their late 50s and early 60s, I have found a grea

14、t many who confess that they have few, if any, female friends that they consider intimate. For some, a daughter has become a confidant as she, too, has entered marriage and parenthood. In most cases, however, it is the husband who, over the years, has become the sole emotional support for her. When

15、many of these women find themselves suddenly alone, due to a divorce or the death of their husbands, they discover that they have not only lost the partner, but also lost the one person in the world with whom they have shared their grief and pain.1. This week, the thoughts and prayers of millions of Americans are with the victims of the Virginia Tech attacks. We pray for the wounded. And we send our love to those who are hurting. The day af

20、ter the attack, Laura and I attended a memorial service on the campus in Blacksburg. We met with faculty members who lost students and colleagues, and shared hugs with grieving moms and dads- including parents who had lost their only child. We offered what words of comfort we could. We wanted everyo

21、ne here to know that this tragedy saddened our entire Nation and that the American people stand with them in an hour of darkness. I have directed some officials to travel to communities across our Nation, to meet with educators, metal health experts, and state and local officials. I have asked the S

Tech, we saw a glimpse of humanity at its worst, and we also saw that at its best. We learnt of students who risked their own

23、safety to attend to wounded classmates. We heard of a teacher who used his body to barricade a classroom door and gave his life so his students could escape through window. And there was a letter written by a Virginia Tech graduate shortly after the attack: “today, there is a pain everywhere in our

24、community, and our hearts are troubled. Yet I am certain our university will persevere. Evil can never succeed, not while there are men and women like the people of Va.Tech who reach every day for success.” This week, we reflect on what has been lost and comfort those enduring a profound grief. 25、somehow we know that a brighter morning will come. We know this because together Americans have overcome many evils and found strength through many storms.
