CHAR-BROILHISTORY

1948ColumbusIronWorksmanufacturesfirstChar-Broilgrills.Thenewcooker,knownasthebarbecuegrillwastheChar-Broil19.ItsoldinthesamehardwarestoresthatcarriedBradley’sagriculturalandstovesupplies.AnadofferingtheCBforonly$19.00,deliveredanywhereintheU.S.soldmoregrillsthanevenBradleythoughtpossible.Thisnewcookerwasa“hotitem”.Earlygrillsweremadefromsteeldrumswithcastironfiregratesandcookinggrates.

1953Hoodedgrillswereintroduced.Asthebackyardbarbecuemarketgrewbiggerandconsumersdemandedmorechoice.

1961CookingSystem:

AHistoryofInnovation

Anenterprisingyoungmanoftwenty-twonamedWilliamClarkBradleymovedtoColumbus,Georgia,in1885toworkasaclerkforBussey-Goldsmith,acottonfactoringfirm.TwoyearslaterhemarriedSarahM.Hall,daughteroffamousConnecticutshipbuilderHenryTHall.Shortlyafter,heandhisbrother-in-lawSamuelA.Carterpurchasedthecottonfactoringbusiness,changingthenametoCarterandBradley.

Immediatelyafterbuyingthebusiness,Bradleyexpandedbyaddingawholesalegrocerydepartmentandbegantomanufactureahighgradefertilizerforthefarmerswhogrewcotton.

In1888,BradleyandG.GunbyJordanfoundedtheThirdNationalBankandtheColumbusSavingsBank.In1930,thesebanksmergedtoformColumbusBank&TrustCompany.TodayCB&TistheleadbankofCB&TBancshares,Inc.,amulti-bankholdingcompanycomposedofmorethanfifteenbanksinGeorgia,Florida,andAlabama,aBankcardandBankDataProcessingCompanyandseveralBroker/DealerCompanies.CB&TBancshares'TotalSystems,foundedin1983,isthesecondlargestcreditcardprocessingcompanyinthenationtoday.

In1895,Bradleyboughthisbrother-in-law'sshareofthebusiness,andchangedthenameoftheCompanytotheWC.BradleyCo.
