Theydrivefishintoalarge,emptymarinegastropodshell.Thentheycarrytheshellandcaptured(捕捉)fishuptothesurface,andshakeitupsidedown.Then,thefishgostraightdownintothedolphins'stomachs.It'scalledshelling,onlythesecondtooluserecordedamongdolphins,andthefirstthatdolphinshavebeenseenlearningfromtheirfriends,justlikegreatapes.

Thedolphinswerefirstobservedusingtoolsover20yearsago,slippingseaspongesovertheirbeaks(喙)toprotectthemastheysearchedforfood.Thisbehaviouriscalledsponging,anditallowsthedolphinstoaccessfoodindeeperwaterchannelsthannon-spongingdolphins.

Spongingisaskillpasseddownfrommotherstodaughters-atypeoflearningcalledverticaltransmission.Butthereisanotherkindoflearninghorizontalsocialtransition,inwhichindividualspickupskillsfromtheirsocialpeers-theirfriends.

Therearesimilaritiesbetweendolphinandgreatapesocietiesthathaveledscientiststobelievethatdolphinsshouldbecapableofhorizontalleaning.

Theirdatacomesfromoveradecade'sworthofobservations.Between2007and2018,theresearchersdocumentedover1.000individualdolphinsacrossnearly5,300encounterswiththeanimals.
