本月初,中国青年报社调中心通过题客调查网和腾讯网对2400余名在校大学生进行的留学意向调查发现,超过80%的大学生有出国留学的想法,没有留学念头的学生只有16%;66%的学生相信留学生归国就业的机会将比国内毕业生更好。

Thesurvey,conductedbytheChinaYouthDailyandinvolvingmorethan2,400universitystudents,revealed*thatmorethan80percentofuniversitystudentswanttostudyabroadwhileonly16percenthasnointention*.

Thesurveyshowed42percentofrespondentsbelieveanoverseaseducationwillbenefittheircareerdevelopment.

Italsoshowed66percentfeltstudentswithanoverseaseducationalbackgroundweremorecompetitivethangraduatesfromdomesticuniversitieswhenitcametojobhunting.

“TheCEOsofNasdaq-listedBaiduandSohubothreceivedanoverseaseducation,”saidHeHe,astudentatQinghuaUniversity,addingthatthevarietyofmajors*offeredbyuniversitiesabroadwasasignificantfactor.

LiangKe,aseniorstudentatthejournalismschoolofQinghua,planstostudysocialworkabroad.Inthepastsummervacation,shehadanAIDSeducationinternship*inIndia,whichsolidified*herdecisiontostudyabroad.

“Socialworkisamuchmoresophisticated*careerinsomecountries.I’mconfidentofmyfuturecareeropportunitieswhenIfinishstudyingabroadandcomeback,”Liangsaid.

Contrarytothehighpercentageofstudentswhoareconfidentofthecompetitivenessofholdinganoverseasdiploma,only2.5percentofrespondentssaidstayinginChinahadmoreadvantagesinjobhunting.

Thesurveyalsofoundmostoftherespondentswhowanttostudyabroadhadaclearcareerplan,with41percenthopingtosetuptheirownventuresaftercomingbacktoChina,35percenthopingtoworkincompaniesand30percenthopingtoenterresearchinstitutionsorcolleges.

MaoTingting,whoworksforanagencythatarrangesoverseasstudyforChinesestudents,saidstudentsweremostlyattractedbythehandsomescholarships*onofferandbetterjobprospects*.Butshewarnedthatthemostimportantfactordecidingstudents’futuresuccessistheirworkexperienceandpracticalability,notadiploma.

Anearlieronlinesurveyhasfoundthatmorethan10percentofreturnedstudentshaveexperienceddifficultyinfindingajobwithinoneyearofreturningfromabroad.

China’sfiveto10percentgrowthinuniversityenrollmentmakesgraduates’jobprospectsgloomier*,Maosaid.

ThesurveyalsoshowedthefavoritedestinationsforoverseasstudyweretheUnitedStates,Britain,France,AustraliaandCanada.

TheoverseaseducationmarketinChinaisaboutashotasBeijing'ssummersun.AfterChina'sannualCollegeEntranceExaminationinJune,thousandsofstudentsrushedintoChinaInternationalExhibitionCentertoattendthe2009BeijingInternationalEducationExpo.

ZouXiaorenfromBeijingNo.2HighSchoolisjustoneofthem.Hugginganarmfulofintroductorydocumentsandfliers,the18-year-oldpushedherwaythroughthecrowdtotheexhibitionstandoftheUniversityofChicago.

ZoutoldCthatshejusttooktheentranceexaminationanddoesn'tyetknowwhethershecangotoheridealcolleges.Herfamilysupportsherdesiretostudyoverseas.

"SomeofmyclassmateshaveappliedforTsinghuaUniversity,PekingUniversityandsoon.IfIcansuccessfullyenterthecollegesIdreamof,Iwillstayhereandwon'tgoabroad,"shesaid."Ifnot,myfamilyandIareplanningformetostudyinU.S.orU.K."

The2009BeijingInternationalEducationExpo,heldfromJune13to15,isBeijing'sbiggesteducationexhibitionoftheyear.Zousaid,"Iheardtherewasabigexpoon,soIcamealongtofindoutmoreaboutstudyingoverseas."

Mr.LiangWen,CEOofChinaInternationalEducationInformationNet(CIEIN),predictsthatmorethan100,000studentsandparentswillattendthisexpo."Manyuniversitieshavesetupinformationdesks:

AccordingtoChina'sMinistryofEducation,almost180,000studentsstudiedabroadin2008.FiguresfromtheBritishCouncilalsoshowedthatvisaapplicationsfromChinesestudentstostudyintheU.K.inthefirstsixmonthsof2008increased46percentoverthesameperiodin2007.LiangWenpointedoutthatcollegesintheU.S.andU.K.arealwaysthefirstchoiceforChinesestudentswhowanttostudyoverseas.

Mr.StephenSmith,directoroftheWashingtonMetroAreaOfficeoftheAmericanInternationalEducationFoundation,saidChinesestudentsandtheirparentscantalkfacetofacewithrepresentativesofeducationalinstitutions,andcollectthelatestandmostaccurateinformationtohelpthemmakeinformedchoices.

"USeducationiswidelyrecognizedbyChinesestudentsandparentsasamongthebest,withhighqualityeducationresources,internationallyrecognizedqualifications,andsimpleapplicationproceduresforbothstudyvisasandpoststudyworkvisas,"hesaid.

Theexhibitionalsogavevisitorstheopportunitytolearnaboutdifferentculturesandlifestylesindifferentcountries,andreturningChinesestudentswerealsoonhandtoanswerquestionsandsharetheirexperiencesofstudyingabroad.

"Ontheonehand,wecannotdenythenegativeinfluenceoftheglobaleconomiccrisisontheeducationmarket,"Smithsaid."Butontheotherhand,thecrisishastosomeextentboosteddemand.It'sabadtimeforpeopletolookforajob,butmaybeaperfecttimeforthemtofurthertheirstudies."

HepredictedtheeducationmarketinChinathisyearwouldexpandevenfasterthanbeforedespiteworldwidefinancialdifficulties.HetoldCthatstudyingintheUSisthepremieroptionforinternationalstudentsandanidealchoiceforChinesestudents.

  Today'sChina,agrowingnumberofparentschoosingtosendtheirchildrentogoabroadforfurtherstudy,childreninthefutureabroaderspacefordevelopment.
