Packingisofparticularimportanceinforeigntradebecauseoceanvoyagesmaybemostdamagingtothegoodsthatarenotproperlypacked.Accident,roughweather,unloading,reloadingandpilferage,everythingonthewayhastobetakenintoconsiderationtoensurethesafearrivalofthegoods.Differenttypesofgoods—goodssubjecttobreakage,goodssubjecttomoisture,goodswithstillotherspecialtreatmentintransit—requiredifferenttypesofpacking.That’swhysomelargeexportformshaveaspecialdepartmentforexportpackingandthewholequestionisunderregularreview.Manyfirmsemployspecialexportpackersorforwardingagentstodotheirpackingforthem.

AnIntroductiontoPacking

Packingisofgreatimportanceininternationaltrade.Itmaybeappropriatelysaidthatpackingistogoodswhatclothingistomen.Packingnotonlyservesasaformofprotection,butalsofacilitatesloading,unloadingandstowage,andpreventspilferage.Furthermoreitcanpromotesales.Packingcanbedividedintotransportpacking（usuallyknownasouterpacking）andsalespacking（usuallyknownasinnerpacking）.Transportpackingisdonemainlytokeepthegoodssafeandsoundduringtransportation.Itmustnotonlybesolidenoughtopreventthepackedgoodsfromanydamage,butalsobepilferage-proof,easytostoreandconvenienttoloadandunload.Salespackingisdonemainlytopushsales.Itisnowuniversallyrecognizedasadecisiveaidinsellinghouseholdconsumergoods.Itcanberealizedinvariousformsandwithdifferentmaterialsaslongasitisnicetolookat,easytohandleandhelpfultothesales.Still,thereisanothercategoryofpacking,called“neutralpacking”.Thiskindofpackingcarriesnomarkofthenameoftheoriginalcountryofthepackedgoodsandnosignsoftheoriginaltrademark,withtheviewtoeludethetariffoftheimportcountryorsatisfythebuyer’sspecialrequirement.

恰当地来说，包装对于货物的作用就如同衣服对于人类。

包装不仅起到了保护的作用，还对货物的装卸、存储提供了方便，并可以防止货物失窃的发生。

此外，包装还能促进商品的销售。

包装可分为运输包装（通常称为外部包装）和销售包装（通常称作内部包装）。

运输包装主要是为了保证货物在运输过程中完好无损。

运输包装不仅仅要足够结实，从而避免货物的损坏，而且还要防盗、易于存储和装卸。

销售包装主要是为了促进销售。

在家庭用品的销售上，人们现在普遍认为包装的作用至关重要。

只要外表美观、易于携带并促进销售，销售包装外表可以五花八门，材料也可以各种各样。

另外还有一种包装称作“中性包装”。

这种包装外表没有货物原产国的标示，也没有原产商标，目的是逃避进口国的关税或满足买方的特殊要求。

Outerpackingmustbestrikinglymarkedtofacilitateidentificationandtransportation.Therearethreeprincipaltypesofmarkingwhichmayhavetobedoneonexportpackage:

（1）Theconsignee’sowndistinctivemarksincludingtheconsignee’sinitials,usuallyinasquare,circle,triangleordiamond,andthenameoftheportofdestination;

（2）Anyofficialmarkrequiredbyauthorities.Forexample,somecountriesrequirethenameoftheoriginalcountryofthegoodstobemarkedoneverypackage,andweightanddimensionsmayalsoberequired;

（3）Specialdirectionsorwarnings.Forexample,variouswarningsaretobestenciledonthepackagesforthebenefitofboththeownerandthecarrier,suchasTHISSIDEUP,DONOTDROP,andOPENTHISSIDE.

Requirementforinnerpackingisincreasinglyhigh,withbeautifulcolor,creativedesignandconvenienthandlingasitschiefconcern.Theprimarymotiveforinnerpackingistopromotethesalesoftheparticulargoods.

Detailssuchasmannerofpacking,kindsofpackingmaterialsandtheburdenofpackingcostshouldbeunmistakablystipulatedinthecontractconcernedandstrictlyobservedbyboththesellingsideandthebuyingside.Letteraboutpackingissuesshouldbeconciseandclear.Anychangesregardingpackingstipulatedinthecontractshouldbemutuallydiscussedanddeterminedbeforepacking.

外部包装必须突出明显的标识以便于货物的确认和运输。

出口包装主要有三种主要的标识：

（1）收货人的标识，包括收货人首写字母，通常写在正方形、圆形、三角形或菱形图案内，此外还要注明目的港；

（2）官方要求的所有正式标示。

例如，一些国家要求每件包装上都要标明货物的原产国、重量和尺寸；

（3）特殊的指示或警示标志。

例如，有关警示标识应印在包装上，以方便收货人和承运人，如“此端向上”、“请勿掉落”和“请于此处打开”等。

对内部包装的要求越来越高，主要集中在颜色鲜艳、设计新颖和易于携带这几个方面。

内部包装的主要目的是促进特殊商品的销售。

相关的合同上必须准确无误地规定包装方式、包装材料以及包装成本等细节问题，买卖双方应该严格遵守。
