InthefarnorthernregionsoftheNorthAmericancontinent,livingconditionscanbeextremeandfewpeoplehavebeenabletoadapttolivingthere.Oneraceofpeople,however,havebeenabletoadapt-theEskimos(爱斯基摩人).TheybelongtothesameraceofpeopleasthenativeNorthAmericansandsomeAsians,andlikethem,theyhavesimilarphysicalfeatures-straightblackhair,highcheekbonesandwidefaces.

ExceptfortheEskimos,mostpeoplewouldfindlivingdifficultinthispartoftheworld.Formuchoftheyear,thelandisonelargeblanketoficeandsnow,andtemperaturessometimesdropaslowas-51degreesC.Eventhelandonthesouthernbordersremainsfrozenmostoftheyear.Butinsummer,whenthesunbeginstomelttheuppermostlayerofice,thesoilsoftensandmanyplantsandflowersbegintogrow.Trees,ontheotherhand,areunabletogrowbecausethesoilbelowthistoplayerremainspermanentlyfrozen(asdeepas300meters).
