principles
AtomicAbsorptionSpectrometry(AAS)isatechniqueformeasuringquantitiesofchemicalelementspresentinenvironmentalsamplesbymeasuringtheabsorbedradiationbythechemicalelementofinterest.Thisisdonebyreadingthespectraproducedwhenthesampleisexcitedbyradiation.Theatomsabsorbultravioletorvisiblelightandmaketransitionstohigherenergylevels.
Atomicabsorptionmethodsmeasuretheamountofenergyintheformofphotonsoflightthatareabsorbedbythesample.Adetectormeasuresthewavelengthsoflighttransmittedbythesample,andcomparesthemtothewavelengthswhichoriginallypassedthroughthesample.Asignalprocessorthenintegratesthechangesinwavelengthabsorbed,whichappearinthereadoutaspeaksofenergyabsorptionatdiscretewavelengths.Theenergyrequiredforanelectrontoleaveanatomisknownasionizationenergyandisspecifictoeachchemicalelement.Whenanelectronmovesfromoneenergyleveltoanotherwithintheatom,aphotonisemittedwithenergyE.Atomsofanelementemitacharacteristicspectralline.Everyatomhasitsowndistinctpatternofwavelengthsatwhichitwillabsorbenergy,duetotheuniqueconfigurationofelectronsinitsoutershell.Thisenablesthequalitativeanalysisofasample.
