TheLeaningTowerofPisawasnotleaningwhenitwasbuiltin1173anditwasstraightlikeapole.Itstartedtoshiftdirectionsoonafterconstructionbecauseofpoorfoundationinadditiontothelooselayerofsubsoil(底土).Atthebeginning,itleanedtothesoutheastbeforetheshakyfoundationstartedtoshiftleaningtowardsthesouthwest.Aftertheperiodofstructuralstrengtheninginthebeginningof21stcentury,nowtheLeaningTowerofPisaleansatanangleof3.97degrees.

In1178,theshiftindirectionwasobservedforthefirsttimewhentheconstructionhadprogressedfurthertothethirdfloor.Thetowerwasveryheavyforthethree-meterfoundationthatwasbuiltonaweakareaofland.

Forcompensating(补偿)theleaningposition,thebuildersstartedtoconstructtheupperfloorswithonesidehigherthantheotherone.Thiscausedthetowertoleanintheotherdirection.Thisunusualstructureledtothetowerbeingactuallycurved.Inspiteoftheseefforts,thetowerkeptonleaning.

ThegovernmentofItalystartedtoplanapreventionofthecompletecollapseofthetowerin1964.However,arequestwasputforwardbytheauthoritiestokeeptheleaningpositionbecauseofthetourismindustryoftheregion.

Afternearlytwodecadesofcarefulplanningbyengineers,historiansandmathematicians,thestabilizationeffortsfortheLeaningTowerofPisastartedin1990.Thetowerwasclosedforthegeneralpublicandthepeoplelivingnearbymovedaway.Forreducingthetotalweightofthetower,itssevenbellswhichrepresentedthesevenmusicalnoteswereremoved.ThetowerwasreopenedforthegeneralpubliconDecember15,2001.

InMay2008,afterremovinganother70metrictonsofearth,theengineersannouncedthatthetowerhadbeenfinallystabilizedanditwouldremainstableforatleast200years.
